Why isn't there more check-related fraud?

Maybe I'm just stupid, but it seems like stealing a lot of money with the info provided on any given check would be incredibly easy. You have the person's full name, bank, ABA routing number, checking account number, address, and sometimes phone number on any check that's ever been given to you. So why isn't theft by use of this information more common? I mean, I used to pay rent by way of entering my ABA number and checking account number into a computer. If that's all it took, what's to stop anyone else who I've ever written a check to from doing the same?

When you paid your rent they likely had your social security number so the risk of somebody being dumb enough to try fraud are low enough for them not to care.

I would say because of the proliferation of anti-counterfeiting techniques and check validation services. It still remains doable, but it isn't worth the effort compared to other forms of identity fraud.

It's "cheque".

Anandtech is in the US and here we say check and we also drive on the correct side of the road.

Says the man with Winny Churchill in his sig.

He was a smart man with awesome quotes. I give credit where credit is due.

I used to work at Home Improvement stores and since you scan the checks, it's difficult to do it. Still happened sometimes but it did happen. Credit Cards have taken over for checks.
