Why isn't there a universal standard for mirroring mobile device displays?

Or something that is more widely adopted.
We have Miracast, but is it universal?

I'm longing for a standard which you just sync up the device to any screen, such as LCD displays in cars, monitors, etc.

That comic, plus the classic problem: these standards often have serious limitations and don't satisfy the needs of major companies, so the adopters usually end up being smaller vendors that can't drive demand.

Miracast is mostly for screen mirroring... which is good if that's what you want to do, but it sucks for beaming specific content (especially non-video content). It also tends not to have great implementations. Apple's AirPlay and Google's casting are both usually quite simple (hit this button, choose your target, stream away) and don't require that you give up your phone screen just to watch a YouTube clip.
