Why isn't the United States buying Canadian Beef ?

There is no reason not to buy it anymore, I don't understand why this ban on our beef is still in place. I was told that it may be retaliation for not supporting the war but I do not honestly think that our stance on the iraq war would cause such turmoil.

Japan said they wouldn't import beef from the US if they open the border.
The US does not want to lose this market

I was under the impressions there was one cow or something like 6 months ago that had madcow, and that's why, or that's the excuse we use. There are alterior motives behind just about everything the government does, however.

Maybe, because they have enough themselves??? After all the US wants to sell their beef here in the EU, just that we are not taking it, hormone treated meat is not allowed in the EU ...

Yay for Japan, we should stop importing their cars.
Basically Japan wants a garranttee that no Canadian beef goes to Japan from the US. The US cannot give this because they have no way of tracing where their beef comes from.

Japan is being stupid and foolish. There are 100's of thousands of Japanese living in Canada and eating beef. They are not dying of Mad Cow. And neither is anyone else in Canada.

Maybe but the Canadian Beef Industry's first custromer (I believe) was the United States, and it is rediculous to continue a ban on our beef simply due to ONE cow half a year ago.

Roughly 2/3 of Canadian beef goes to export. And 1/3 for domestic use.

Montana farmers supportive
The U.S. border remains closed to Canadian beef, but if sympathetic Americans have their way, it won't be for long.

"The grass is the same on both sides of the border, the grain's the same, the farmers are the same and as far as I can tell, the beef's the same," said Hank Zell, a Montana rancher who lives just south of Coutts, Alta.

Farmers from that state lent their support yesterday in Coutts, hoping it will encourage American officials to reopen the border.

"I think we're all frustrated with Japan's position on this because they're making it a political issue," said Steve Pilcher, on the executive of the Montana Stockgrower's association.

"If nothing else, though, we want to express our moral support for the Canadian beef industry -- we're extremely sympathetic to their hardship," Pilcher said.

Down in Cut Bank, Mont., about 160 km south of Coutts, local chamber of commerce president Ray Jennings was aware of the Coutts rally and added the community is sympathetic to Canada's plight.

"We're all affected by this because we're close to Canada and we have lots of the same interests -- our local economy depends on the beef industry too," he said.

Ron Jensen, another Montana rancher, said, "I think this border would have been re-opened already if it wasn't for (Prime Minister Jean) Chretien."

The human form of mad cow has an incubation period of 25-40 years, so there could be people with mad cow disease and they wont know it until years from now.

1 case of mad cow and an entire country stops buying beef

the hell's the matter with people.... now we gotta slaughter something like half a million cattle or something ridiculous.. that's SO silly.
