Why isnt software piracy made into such a big deal as music?

Why do you think software piracy isnt made into such a bigger deal now a days?

Everywehre I turn, its RIAA RIAA RIAA

no Software-IAA. lol

1. STFU before they get ideas

2. Most developers can only rely on figures of intimidation such as Steve Balmer since they can hardly afford to eat, much less have their own on-call goon squad.

Also, MS would rather let some users use a pirated copy of Windows because it helps their market share. More people using Windows = more programs developed for Windows = more people still need Windows. Maintaining market share is key. If most of the market switched to Linux one day, Windows would be dead the next 😛

Because with software I can just sell my product.
With music I can just sell my product, but I will get a knock on the door by some thugs from the RIAA demanding their cut.

wait, you mean.... you have to pay for software? wtf? i didn't know that.

As has been suggested - there's no one single governing/legal body over the software industry like the RIAA of the music industry or the MPAA of the movie industry.

Maybe it's because the most-pirated software is overpriced crap that few, if any, pirates would actually bother buying if piracy was eliminated?

I'm just thinking the number of lost Photoshop sales has to be tiny compared to the number of lost PC game sales or CD sales.

I feel software piracy is like a free marketing for them. The real profit for them is only on corporate use and you wont find any Piracy there... Piracy is what made MSFT so popular... I believe they encouraged it at one point.

Yeah, they do. Both the business software industry and the entertainment software industry have equivalents to the RIAA.

And I won't agree with the premise of this thread that it isn't made out to be a big deal. It is. The software industry has attempted the prevention route. That's not possible for movies and music. It doesn't work perfectly for software either, but it prevents casual piracy by less technical users.

Microsoft is a funny company in some ways. Pirating the MS operating system actually helps them. (though, not as much as buying the system). The reason it helps them is because instead of using the competitions software you are using theirs. A weak competition is always better then a strong one.

The gaming companies not so much. They still have some competition (though intermittent)

They do, they just go about it in a more subtle way. The RIAA goes around suing people it claims are infringing on copyrights. Software developers put invasive DRM on their software which cripples end users machines (regardless of whether they obtained the software legally or not). The RIAA can't use complex DRM because people still listen to CDs on players from the 1980s; if the RIAA could put DRM on every CD to prevent people from copying or ripping it, they would (and they've tried).

It used to be, but pirating movies & music is the new "in-thing." 😛

(Movies & music also get copied much faster and to many more devices than software can.)

The gaming industry is surely being affected by piracy. Computer game developers are starting to run for consoles, where there is a huge built in fan base and piracy is nothing like PC. It is hurting PC game consumers, unlike stealing music which really doesnt.

Also, there are easier methods to retard piracy for PC games (requiring a specific verifiable key-code in order to play online multiplayer games, for example.)

The same can be said of the pr0n industry but I recall reading an article somewhere that they plan to change that. 😛

Might be too little too late with the advent of the *Tube sites.
