Because Roots is primarily about slavery. And slavery is American culture (like it or not).
Slavery was PART of American culture over a hundred years ago. There's nobody alive today who was part of the slave trade. There are no former slaves. Even their KIDS are probably all dead.
People need to GTF over it.

People forget about a lot of things that happened. No one makes a big stink about the crusades anymore do they? They should never forget, but stop throwing it in everyones faces like it was the worst thing to ever happen to a group of people on the planet.Originally posted by: Kevin1211

just because it happened over a hundred years ago you want people to just forget about it? Without the least concern with the brutality these people went through? Yes its over, but that doesnt stop the fact that people need to acknowledge the wrongdoings the white man has done. Yea, lets get over it, like it never happened  :disgust:

OP, you're an idiot. What's the point of constantly reminding everyone about what happened some 150 years ago, in english class... High school english is for reading comprehension, not history... if you want to learn about American history take a history class. If you want to learn about a particular groups history, take a special interest history class.
You don't get it, do you? If you're white, you're directly responsible for slavery. No exceptions. Now get on your knees, bitch, and apologize :|Originally posted by: SampSon

During the time slavery was active in America my family was over in sicily farming grapes and olives. I in no way shape or form will ever apologize to african americans for the slavery they were put through.

wait, let me get this correct. You believe slavery wasnt the worst thing to happen to? im sure the slaves-to-be were all happy and giddy to be part of the largest (forced)migration known to man. And not to mention the way they were treated for the next couple hundred of years, and even how blacks are treated today. If you do not believe american slavery was the worst thing to happen to a particulary race (group of people, what ever you want to call it), then you sir are one ignorant man.

im in college right now, and recently chose to write about the novel Roots for one of my papers. Ive heard countless times from numerous people that this is one of the greatest books, but i never got the chance to read it. Now, after reading about half-way through, i nearly kicked myself for not reading it earlier. This book is so deep and prolific, i believe EVERY highschooler (or person for that matter) should read it. I learned things about african culture i never knew. Such as, when people pose questions such as "africans enslaved their own people, so why isnt it no different for when white people enslaved them." I thought slavery was the same for both cultures. But, slavery was sooooo different in african culture compared to how it was in the americas. If you guys want me to go into detail i will.
Furthermore, it puts african culture into a positive spin. Illustrating african life as not barbaric, but something good (I don't know how to explain it, you just have to read the book to get the picture).
Also, like i said, I've only read half-way so far. I'm up to the part where Kunte arrives in the americas as a slave. Haley uses graphic detail to describe how it was in the slave ships. He tells how the men where chained up, not being able to move for more than a month. And how the men were closely packed and about half died from disease. Also, telling how the women were repeatly raped. Not to mention the beatings the slaves received in a regular basis.
i believe that this book should go into the list of books that students should read in highschool. The book just doesnt tell of a grueling journey of one slave, but of the millions of slaves that were stolen from their homelands and forced to work. Anyone else agree?

Why isn't some book about the history of Indian culture, and Chinese culture, and Italian culture, and Peruvian culture, and Japanese culture, etc, mandatory reading in high school?
Because Roots is primarily about slavery. And slavery is American history (like it or not).
That's because I can't make up history, or rely on a fictional book to base my opinions on like the OP.Originally posted by: AccruedExpenditure

Or Ethnic Cleansing in Rwanda? Croatia? Sudan?

A good HS history book will have a chapter or two about slavery, why dedicate another MONTH or SO to read a fictional narrative... We don't do this for any time in history... you don't study fictional narratives to learn history in high school buddy...

Anyway, the book was good, but not worthy of mandatory high school reading.

The happy part is that I'm wealthy enough never to have to frequent thoes areas.the sad part is if you said that in some areas you'd probably get killed for it because people feel so entitled to hate these days.

the way blacks are "treated" today probably has more to do with the way they act as a culture than something that happened hundreds of years ago. if you want to try and play the race card look at what prominent BLACKS are saying (bill cosby? chris rock?).
