Got the 6month renewal notice for my car (2005 Mazda3i w/155k miles) for Jan1 - Jun30.
$397.75 again for the 3rd straight time (since Jul 2011). Full coverage, Northern VA.

i have a clean record: no tickets + no points in the past 5yrs.

but shouldnt the premium be dropping since my car is depreciating?

Even I ask lots of needless questions on internet, but...

Things like this... seriously, pick up the phone and call your insurance provider.

I had the exact same question. Called my Geico, and in 15 seconds, an agent was super thorough with me as to when and how much my rates would drop, the whole point system, etc...

Cost to repair is not the same as market value. This is a common misconception in homeowner's insurance as well.

Sounds like you need to stop being lazy, and try shopping around.
My renewal quotes have in the past increased year on year, by shopping around I saved something like 1/3rd off what my current provider was trying to charge.

If you are lazy and stupid enough to stick with the same provider year on year, they will have no problem with trying to shaft you by keeping premiums the same or even increasing them.

Oh, and car insurance is mostly for the other guy, not for you. You and your car only contribute to the chances of having an accident. The other guy gets paid.

Car insurance rates don't depend much on the rate your car depreciates.

More on how much YOU are depreciating.

I change my auto and home insurance (almost) every year.

They always pull the same BS, give you a nice sweet low rate and then raise it when it comes time for renewal because they expect the average person is too lazy to switch providers and will just cough up the $50 bucks or whatever it is.

In your case, having it stay the same isn't too bad, but I would still be shopping around.

Never give insurance companies brand loyalty, they don't care about you one bit.

And I hope that rate is for good full coverage with at least $250,000 bodily injury, preferably $500,000.

Every year? wow that's to often to change.

I have had the same car insurance for 16 years. it goes down every few years. I have called around and i can't get cheaper then what i have.

Same with home owners. its $100-200 cheaper then any where else i have called.

You guys are lucky i live outside the city and I pay 140 a month mostly because of my area. 50/100 full coverage for a 2011 Lancer. I had Allstate for 2 years and the rate was double.

My last car insurance company increased my yearly amount for no reason. I called to ask why and some lady said they "reevaluated" my policy but could not explain anything other than that.

I did not renew with them and changed insurance companies in a heartbeat.

I've been driving for 44 years without a claim and my premiums never went down. Wouldn't have car insurance except I couldn't register my car.

Screw the insurance companies.

If you do not like it you could always self-insure. It's allowed in California.

Post bond with the local DMV instead. Every state will provide you with the option.

Yeah same here. I've had state farm for home, auto, and umbrella for about 10 years now. I call around to the others (geico, prudential, etc...) every once in a while and they are always higher.
