Can you really hear it over the game you are playing? I cant but I sit really far away from it.

The only annoying sound I hear coming from an Xbox is the god damn Robot voicemask in Mechassault. :|

Anyone who uses it - turn the damn thing off. It feels like you're f@cking my ear.

So it frys under it's own heat, then it'll stop making noise. :p

If you had one you'd know the intake/exhaust fans are on the side. Doesn't matter what you put on top of it as long as it doesn't crush it.

Doesn't bother me one bit. It's <6 ft away from me.

I'm also picky with noise and GameCube make a tiny humming noise.

But I got Wavebird so play from at least 12~15 feet away. :D

I know what you mean Spooner... with games it's not too bad cause the sound usually covers it, but with DVD's (especially quieter movies) it's very irritating. One of the reasons why I bought my xbox was for the DVD player and now I'm thinking about buying one seperately. Definitely a nuisance. I'm thinking about gettin rid of it altogether actually... Halo is the only good nonsports game.

I don't notice it when I am playing games... maybe it is just yours, or maybe it is because I turn the volume up really really loud.

The childs voice is a lot worse and what makes it even worse than worse is that it is always louder than the other voice masks. When was your Xbox made? Mine is 12-12-01. The newer ones don't have a CPU fan which cuts the noise down to nothing but the hard drives in them is supposedly loud like what you'd hear from a Bigfoot drive. I can hear the fan and the hard drive in mine but they are both under 28db, at least that is supposedly the loudness my PC fans are. No problems here.

Not to turn this into a debate, but my Xbox is MUCH quieter than the PS2 I had. Stand-alone DVD players will still be the quietest.

Yes, I can vouch for that. My PS2 you can hear from 10 feet away. I can't sleep very well with it on. It's got a relativley high speed 60MM fan.

Almost all consoles never used to have moving parts in them so therefore heat wasn't as much of an issue (plus the processor running them wasn't very powerful either).

I have a DC and it whirs alot when loading data, but I find the Xbox the loudest operating all the time if you don't turn the power off when you're done playing the game or movie, but that makes me jump to the only component that doesn't turn off with a remote (you would have thought they would have done that, just an idea).
