why is Windows so ugly?

I've never used macs, but I have to admit, from day 1, Mac OS has been much more aesthetically pleasing. Clean, unfussy, elegant, pretty. Windows has gone from just plain to ugly to gaudy. The default XP theme looks like something designed for a Play Doh computer. (It sure is blue!) Vista adds more bells and whistles but looks only a little better.

Steve Jobs said Bill Gates has no taste. I think he nailed that one.

Note: I'm not arguing functionality or usability of the GUI; simply looks.

To me, Windows is like one of those X gaming cases with glowing LEDs and Mac is like this

If you don't like the Windows interface, there are two words for you:

Change it.

It's not that hard, there are perhaps thousands of themes to use. You like Macs desktop, great for you. I'll wager there are plenty of people that don't like it. They change it. Same goes for Linux. I didn't like the default layout. What did I do? I changed it. My Windows XP box? I didn't like the default GUI look either. What did I do? Hmmmm... I changed it. My Windows XP and Linux boxes now are "Clean, unfussy, elegant, pretty" and "aesthetically pleasing".

I don't want or need Steve Jobs or Bill Gates to tell me what my computer should look like. I could care less about their sense of taste. I prefer to rely on my own sense of taste and tailor my OS appearance for me to use. Not Bill or Steve.

You can change it to look like Mac OS X. Tons of people feel the same way you do and do that. A quick google search brought this up.

why not switch then?
the grass is always look greener on the other side
Make a switch, live with it for a year or two then let us know if you think we should switch

Taste is relative. It's a problem when some people believe their taste is higher/better than the other.

Each to his own

Windows XP in the classic mode is where it's at. The default theme is so garish and uses so many saturated colors that it not only looks ridiculously childish but also interferes whenever you want to do any color critical work. The media center theme is better, but both themes have oversized window decorations (title bars, etc.) that look horrible when downsized to a proportion similar to that of the classic theme. </rant>

Depends on what you find most important in an operating system: eye candy, functionality, or inexpensiveness, etc., etc., etc.

I'm not operating one over the other, mind you (my indoctrination into computers was Unix). Apple has always been the leading force in making computers for those that want to just use the thing and not be bothered with the underlying mechanisms. Then, adding the eye-candy only served those non-techies to further the fandom.

But others have already posted that you can and should change the way Windows appears to you on your PC. If you want someone else to do it for you then buy an Apple. :)

Obviously coming from a W2K stoneage GUI but... Wow that's pretty interesting. I'm not sure what I liked better the interface, or the web driven presentation. :)

Yes... where as Windows simply tries to keep all that "underlying" stuff totally invisible... like opening up the main hard drive and your greated with a big message telling you not to be browsing the drive... you get the same message with the Program Files and Windows directory too.

Apple makes everything clearly visible to see, they just do so inteligently so it's easy to comprehend. The "eye candy" is not just sweets for your eyes it serves a very important purpose. To tell the user what things are and what they do, as well as what they're doing.

More Window users are Non-techie than MacOS X users.

There really is no point in "prettying" up Windows just so it's more pleasing on the eyes. It has to do more. One area where Windows lacks badly is icon usage. Most icons are generic and simple. You rarely ever see custom folder icons for applications, for example. And application icons are simple and generic. The same can be said for document icons as well. Icons are pretty bad in Windows... probably because there are no decent tools for creating them. So in the end everything looks the same.

Of course I'm sure none of you care do you...

Have to agree with Win XP in the classic mode. Nice and fast too.
