Why is Windows so crap at displaying a desktop background image properly?

I use these cool hi-res, hi-color backgrounds from Digital Blasphemy, but why is it that Windows can't display them as desktop background images properly? the color flows are weird, and it looks like it uses 16bit color, when really in 32bit color mode. 16bit almost looks like 8bit. When I open the image in ACDSee for example, the color transitions are completely as they should be, but why can't Windows show them normally?

All because of the wonderfull bitmap format. And probably because windows cant display them right, or the utility you have to convert the images is crappy.

Have you tried using ACDSee to apply a jpeg as a background image?

If you're using active desktop so you can use jpg's as your backround, don't. Use a good image editor like Paintshop Pro or Photoshop to convert the file to BMP. I use backgrounds from Digital Blasphemy as well, and they look fine on my system.

to be honest, your ideas of me having a bad BMP converter are ridiculous because I've already told you that ACDSee displays them normally :)

Thanks John, they look wonderful now :D I just took the bmp file (as said, I'm not converting in a wrong way, using PSP and it works) and used the Tool/Set Wallpaper :)
