Why is Verizon so much more expensive?

Supposedly they have the best coverage, but currently T-mobile is offering 600 min anytime w/ roaming and long dist and unlimited weekends with Fridays now included in weekend minutes for $39.99. Plus they offer deals on their good color phones. I have been happy with T-mobile and havent had any coverage issues up until i recently moved to a condo that gets no coverage from T-mobile.

To switch to Verizon I get 50% less in anytime mins to 400 and no roaming...plus their phones are really expensive unless you get suckered into signing their 2 yr plan.

that's true that verizon has the best coverage, but not only they are more expensive, the phones they offer are REAL suck!

well, this is why. 90% of the world use GSM, verizon uses CDMA :D

btw, I am with AT&T. the receive text messages free owns!

I think it's all about the coverage. Friends that are on Verizon use it because of their superior service.

CDMA seems to be the superior technology and is more advanced then GSM which is "newer" technology. ATT is still in the basement since their transition to GSM has been a disaster and TDMA is definitely inferior technology. That said, I'm sticking with Sprint:)

If you have twice the amount of minutes but can't make a phone call, theres no point. ;)

I remember a few years back everyone got Cingular due to the unliminted nights and weekends, but funny how none of them had reception and/or it was too busy to make a phone call.

exactly, I have T-Mobile right now and it is solid service but Verizon is just so much better, I'm making the switch. Plus everyone I know has Verizon so those 1000 mobile to mobile minutes are plenty for me along with free nights/weekends. The LG 4400 and 6000 are quality phones from what I hear.

if CDMA is superior than GSM, then ask yourself why 90% of the world use GSM, not CDMA.
GSM has been here US for a few years, the other countries had started 10years+ ago.

ATT just started their 850mhz network.:) they are using 1900mhz now, it really sucks for penetrating building walls. :(

As said earlier, coverage cost money. People are also willing to pay for superior coverage.
But I'll stick with T-Mobile.

Just because more of the world uses it doesn't mean it's better.

GSM is good for high traffic, high density urban deployment. It has some penetration capabilities, is easy to implement, and fairly cheap. Unfortunately this does not work well in the US where there are wide expanses of space. Because GSM has a fairly short range compared to CDMA it needs more towers. Because most providers using GSM are building on top of their existing infrastructure you get lots of gaps in the service.

CDMA is a tried and tested 50 year old (WW2 era) technology that not only has tremendous range and load capacity but also is great for building penetration. Because of its range it needs fewer towers and is good for open area deployment which is why Verizon has much better overall nationwide coverage.

Verizon knows they have the best service, and word of mouth does them good which is why they are doing so well despite the lack of promotions such as free text messaging / 7pm nights / 3 day weekends.

their walkie talkie service blows. Not like Nextel at all.

After you press the button, you have to wait 2-4 seconds before you can speak.

Nextel rules the walkie talkie world. Nextel's service on the other hand...

Maybe it has lower implementation costs then CDMA. I'm trying to remember if the telecom companies providing wireless service is tied into the governments. It wouldn't be surprising at all if it was. I merely stated CDMA was technologically superior. Actually, I'm pretty sure CDMA has higher operating costs since Qualxomm owns the patents to many of the technologies in use. It all ties back to them. Qualcomm is also responsible for iDEN (Nextel), if I'm not mistaken. Notice how Nextel is much more expensive then other carriers. Sprint, for example, is reluctant to carry phones that don't utilize Qualcomm chips in them as to quality issue (ensuring no phone is significantly inferior to another as far as signal/call quality).

When I went to Sturgis last summer the only person in our group that could get phone service in the middle of nowhere was on Verizon. I just switched from AT&T to Verizon yesterday. For $60/mo my girlfriend and I get 400 anytime minutes, unlimited night and weekend, and unlimited phone to phone, or something like that. More than enough minutes, and the coverage beats any other company.

Ahh, the big debate. We carry both Verizon and T-Mobile.

Verizon's map is WAY WAY WAY bigger than T-Mobile's. I mean, way bigger. Their digital map is twice the size, plus they have a massive analog network to fall back on. That said, if you're like me and live in/near a city, get T-Mobile. Many more minutes.

I personally prefer most GSM phones, however, when it comes to data transfer, CDMA is the superior technology.

This area, not happy w/ sprint, ATT wasn't too good either. verizon is the most widespread. And we haven't gone over the minutes barrier so it's good so far on that end.. but the offers from tmobile are attractive....

One question tho. What do you think has the better voice quality. Everyone seems to think GSM does but I think CDMA does. Maybe its because I don't really have much experience with clear GSM phones (gf is switching from Cingular to Sprint).

Around here, the CDMA phones seem to have a little bit of a metallic tone to them....alot of that is carrier/phone/area dependant though.

I loved Verizon. But like others have mentioned, their phones suck and they don't shell out the same types of minutes competitors offer. I have T-Mobile right now and they are ok...I still would rather go back with Verizon.

I just got the LG VX6000 and it is easily on par with any cameraphone offered by another provider. The VX7000 is due this spring which has even more cool stuff. Granted, Verizon only has *one* cool phone now but at least it has one. Oh, and the VX6000 easily has the best reception out of all Verizon's phones which is saying a lot.

They're banking on their superior reception. I have Cingular and the reception is horrible! I've been with them for 3 years because my nights start at 8pm instead of 9pm like the plans of today.
