Why is Valve abandoning their games, except for tf2

At this point I suspect they are developing a new Engine for HL3. HL2's engine was very good, but is getting real long in the tooth now.

I would think that too.

For me, I think HL and HL2 were both pretty revolutionary for the gaming world. If they released just a continued story (HL episodes 1,2, and the fabled episode 3 as a game) I think a lot of people would be disappointed. Whatever they got going for HL3 considering the game and the legacy it would have to be pretty amazing and would need to continue the story they have in place.

I think Valve just doesn't want to endlessly make sequels of the same games. There have been 4 HL games if you count the episodes.

The two episodes don't even count as one game together, they are like DLC for HL2.

Unlike other dev companies, Valve isn't under any pressure from a publisher demanding X number of games per year. Hell, they could make all their future releases free to play and they'd still be fine. They own Steam, which has and will continue to make them a TON of money. It's a good and bad thing. Good because it allows them to spend the necessary amount of time on polish, and bad because... well, see Episode 3.
