The double-period thing probably happens most often because double-spacers don't realize most smartphones and portable devices will already add a period when you type two spaces. So, they type: period, space, space. They end up with two periods and a single space.

I don't think most smartphones will add a second period. Not in my experience, anyway...

And my boss sucks at periods, it's fucking retarded. Every email he sends sounds like he's supposed to say something after it or like he wants someone to answer some implied question but he won't actually just type the question mark.

"There is on on X, one in Y and one in Z...and I think there is another one floating around somewhere but I am not sure where...."
"Please have her call the PC help desk 7509 ASAP...thanks..."

I hate it when people do that. Have you noticed how some people just use huge strings of periods at the end of every single sentence?

Actually, you're wrong. Two periods after a space is only acceptable when using a typewriter or a fixed-width font.

I'll sometimes use two dots for an ellipsis out of error (usually typing quickly). I also put two spaces after a sentence, and you can't make me stop :|.

Would it make just as much (less/more?) sense if the sentence read: "Why is this the new cool thing in grammar?" instead of, "Why is this the cool new thing in grammar?"

Since it seems like OP is talking about the cool thing(fcuked up spelling, punctuation and stuff of its ilk) THAT is NEW on the Internet/social networking scene.

I use the double period "ellipses" sometimes when I text. I have a flip-phone and I'm often too lazy to hit the third period. It seems harmless enough.

It's kind of funny because I actually type everything out in my texts (never abbreviate; use apostrophes, commas, etc.) but I allow myself that one affectation.
