Why is this guy's bail so low?

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A prominent Washington-area Muslim cleric was convicted Tuesday of urging his followers, days after the attacks of September 11, 2001, to go to Afghanistan and help the Taliban fight U.S. military forces.

Ali al-Timimi, 41, was convicted on all 10 counts of an indictment brought in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Virginia.

The Islamic scholar remains free on $75,000 bail pending sentencing, which Judge Leonie Brinkema has scheduled for July 13.

Possible sentences for the charges on which he was convicted range from 30 years to life in prison.

MacMahon said that unless some of the counts are dismissed on appeal, al-Timimi is likely to end up with a life sentence.

As an American citizen I am offended but also as a citizen of this country we are stiffling is right of speech. He can advertise all he wants but actions speak louder than words. So as long as his words fall on deaf ears the prosecuters are wrong. Being realistic he'll get off if he takes it to supreme court.

Saying the government sucks is protected under the First Amendment. Urging your followers to join a U.S. adversary to fight American soldiers is criminal and is an act of terrorism/treason.

I don't like saying this, but in this situation, if the guy didn't like the situation, he should have MOVED THE HELL OUT OF THE U.S. Don't urge people to fight U.S. soldiers. Just move the hell away.

what's the big deal? take the telephone pole out of your ass and get on with your life. his bail is low because his crimes are a joke.

To answer the original question though (re: bail), I have no clue. They should have remanded him without bail, as he seems like an extreme flight risk. That is, unless he's wearing a tether or something...

I completely and totally agree with you. If you dont like U.S. policy then just move but if we persecute him for using the rights we gave him then whos at more of a fault. Him for putting his foot in his mouth or us for taking the rights away we gave to him?
