Why is there still a price premium for socket 939 dual cores?

I see people a lot of people still trying to get $100+ for them when a comparable cpu for a socket am2 goes for half that? What's the deal?

Since the 939 CPUs arent being made anymore and many people still have the 939 mobo and dont want to buy a new mobo / ram for an upgrade.

Hence supply has dwindled considerably but there is still decent demand.

ya, I was also thinking of throwing a cheap dual-core into my single-core 939, but it looks like a lot of other people had the same idea too...It looks like AMD could have made a lot more money just by keeping the 939 socket running a bit longer. At any rate, you can get a cheap intel board with ddr1+agp if you really want to keep your old hardware on life support, otherwise, it may be time to upgrade...

I'm thankful I popped a dual core into my PC soon enough. :)

Nowadays I'd be screwed. They're very expensive.

Yeah I got an Opty 180 for cheapy to replace my 148. Now I have two 939 DDR opties that I plan on tending to like a farmer's hearth in winter. If I was to do it now, I probably wouldn't.

AM2 is a newer, and better socket then 939... AM2 REPLACED 939... 939 costs lots of money cause it is not being made, and people say to themselves "well, it is cheaper to buy the single replacement part for 100$ then it is to replace everything..."

The "better" part is debatable considering the equivalent AM2 processor is slightly slower than a 939 processor. AMD changed sockets only to support DDR2 memory. The new socket actually caused a very slight performance penalty compared to socket 939. Had AMD decided they were just going to skip DDR2 until Phenom, then AM2 would not have come out until recently.

I sold my s939 rig on the forum last night in like 2 minutes. I guess I didn't sell it for enough :p

It's not worth upgrading to AM2 for a 4% gain in performance. Once everybody figured out that AM2+ CPU's would not work in an AM2 mb the bottom fell out of AM2 pricing. AM2 is now a dead socket also. Un-upgradable. I just switched to Intel and sold all my Opty gear for as much as I paid for it 16 months ago.

arent the AM2 and AM2+ close enough to be identical... I see a some of AM2 mobos getting bioses to support the new quad phenom processors...
