Why is there no free computer DVD software?

My DVD drive came with PowerDVD, which, in my opinion, sucks. So I went looking for a free (possibly OSS) DVD decoder. I'm finding absolutely NOTHING except non-free software.

What's the deal? I can find literally ANY other type of software in free and/or open source form. Why not DVD player software?

Yup, WMP10 does not have a DVD decoder packaged with it. It relies on external decoder software.

I thought so too. Isn't it because mpeg-2 is copyrighted.

Hah, you think the DVD stuff is good, try using it to stream a DVD across the LAN to 40 computers. It's orgasmically awesome.

Been using PowerDVD since version 2.5, like it a lot, got no problem with it. Currently using version 5 deluxe. What's your beef w/ PowerDVD?
