Why is the Wii so good?

why doesnt the ps or xbox duplicate wii's success? it shouldnt be too hard adding the sensor bar via the usb port and having new controllers right?

Well, even the mediocre wii games can be a blast to play in multiplayer mode. Maybe that's what separates it from the rest, other than price?

Are there any shooter type games for the Wii? Right now Metroid interests me most. Now that I think about it, Metroid is the only Nintendo franchise that has really interested me out of all the others.

Price is a big factor. They could develop the controllers but then users have to not only buy the console but two sets of controllers, regular and motion. Then you need games that utilize the controllers which makes the game doing well rely on people being willing to shell out the extra money for more controllers. Sony's will have enough trouble getting people to shell out for the dual-shock 3 and I don't think MS cares much at this point. Maybe next generation.

The PS2 is getting some sports controllers that work similar to the Wii but I don't foresee them selling very well.

There's a couple others (COD, Red Steel, maybe more) but from what I've read Metroid is the first one that gets the controls right.

I really hope MS and Sony don't go that route any time soon.

Only MP3 and RE4 have favorable Wii shooting controls, IMO.

Why is it that the first-party developers make such consistently better games than third parties? Hudson Soft must have known that Wing Island was no Pilotwings.

I think it has mostly to do with the fact that first party games are funded by corporations with truly disgusting amounts of money, and can afford to take the time and money to make a game right, and bear the risk in case it goes wrong.

There are a few 3rd parties that go by this philosophy as well for all their games, such as blizzard or epic - whens the last time either has released anything but a stellar game?

Some that give certain franchises the time and money - Capcom = RE, Konami = MGS4, Squeenix = DQ/FF, and EA (gasp!) = Spore. All while simultaneously vomiting out various other half baked titles.

Companies shouldnt expect a free ride on the Wii without putting in the time and money to make a decent game, just like any other system. If anything, casual gamers are even MORE discerning than hardcore gamers, since it takes an incredible game or concept to actually get them to go out and buy anything.

PS3 can duplicate most of what the pointer's doing with the controller and the Eyetoy.

And apparently 3rd parties have already made/are making sports controllers for the PS2.

Yeah me too. The Wii is fine for a different gaming experience, but it's controls would NOT work on the PS3/xbox 360. Even the PS3's motion sensing crap is irritating.

I can say first hand that Red Steel is a jerky mess with the Wii remote. I'll just stick to FPS on my PC until one of these companies gets the bright idea to add good keyboard + mouse support to their games. Why is a keyboard and mouse so hard to add in these days of wireless goodness?

Any website with the numbers on how many games have been sold thus far for each "next gen" console?

You can get a general idea by adding up the top sellers here:
http://vgchartz.com/

They have yearly top sellers and life-to-date sales for games.

What is a hardcore gamer? I own a Wii and I'm definitely not a casual gamer. I have a very nice PC (Q6600, 4GB RAM, 8800GTX), Playstation 2, and a Wii. I appreciate what each of these platforms brings to the table. For reasons already mentioned in this thread I don't have a 360 and the PS3 just isn't worth it with few to no good games on it currently.

red steel's implementation sucked compared to metroid. They did an EXCELLENT job I think. And short of a mouse and keyboard, and maybe some quick turn buttons, it's great.

I can't play bioshock on my computer, so I told myself I'd eventually get an xbox 360 for those types of games. Trying to force myself to learn dual analog for FPS's on my buddy's xbox.. it's very frustrating after playing metroid.

You get used to it... I like it a lot now. Maybe more than mouse/keyboard, but that's hard to say since I haven't played a PC FPS in years. :Q I've never been into console FPS, but I picked up Bioshock and liked it, then I tried out Halo 1 and liked it (other than the driving controls), and now I'm playing Halo 3 and I'm holding my own online. Dual analog sticks is like second nature to me now, and that's after only a few weeks.

You'll notice that the defenders of the Wii here are all bringing up Z:TP, RE4, and MP3 as their examples of great Wii games. These are hardly casual games. Let us examine a couple scenarios here:
1. The Wii was mostly bought by casual gamers. If that's true, those three games are irrelevant, and the library might be OK.
2. The Wii was mostly bought by hard-core gamers. If that's true, those three games are relevant, but the library definitely sucks.

I wasn't saying that the Wii was limited to pleasing only the casual gamer. I was just pointing out that casual gamers view things different than hardcore gamers and it will really show in an internet community.

I have everything you mentioned plus a 360. I love the Wii. I would consider myself a hardcore gamer, but asking me to define what that means universally is kind of pointless. It means something different for everyone. However, when you are part of an internet community where the general consensus about the population is that most are "hardcore gamers" and tech geeks you are going to have a lot of debate like this which never moves past square one. You will not find nearly as much debate like this amongst casual gamers. The reason is because many of the hardcore gamers forget that a good game is nothing more than a game which people have fun playing and that's all there is to it. It's all subjective and the reasons why people are having fun playing it really don't matter that much in the end yet it is these reasons which inspire the majority of the debate.

3. The Wii was bought by a mixture of hardcore and casual gamers, but the majority of casual gamers tend to enjoy the Wii more than they do the 360 and PS3. Those three games are relevant to both casual and hardcore gamers just like all hit titles have been since the dawn of video games. The library in its entirety provides a different style of entertainment than the libraries of the 360 and PS3. This style happens to appeal to a lot of casual gamers in addition to some hardcore gamers. Like all consoles in our past, they will be bought for the games and many of the consumers buy them for just a few particular titles which are often the hit titles.

Yeah, I do plan to get MP3 eventually. I'm having fun with Super Paper Mario and Super Smash Bros at the moment. Just got World in Conflict installed last night and played through the tutorial this morning. At the risk of going way OT, that game (World in Conflict) looks like it is going to be loads of fun. I'm going to have to get used to WASD for moving the camera around though (yes, I'm one of those guys who doesn't use default controls for FPS).

Its small, cheap, has full BC with GC, built in wifi, and doesnt die after 3 weeks (360) and is overall a very well built piece of HW. Out of the box the thing is fun. If only it was a little more powerful so we could get a GTA4 game on it it would be perfect. But for 250 you will have a great time with it. Then of course there is Zelda.🙂

The Wii was bought by gamers, and the rest of the people in the household of whatever ages are joining in the fun.

Thats what the commercials make it look like, in reality though, I doubt the entire family is playing the wii every night.

This is one of the main reasons I got mine. We don't play every night, but it was more than worth the money so far. Continuous entertainment without a continuous fee is hard to find these days. I have no regrets. Besides, nothing feels new and exciting forever. That doesn't mean it still can't be fun though.
