John Leo has an interesting column in this weeks US News and World Report. As usual he's right on the money.
Here are some of the things he said:
The media, particularly the British press, focuses on the highly emotional when discussing Palastinian fatalities. For example, "He kept bleeding" was a fornt page headline in the April 4 Washington Post. Another Washington Post headline was "Father, son dead; family wonders why." Says Leo, "This is a very unusual way to cover compat, particularly when there are no neutral observers around to back up the stories supplied by angry partisans."
In contrast, there is not much "emotional coverage of the Israeli civilians intentionally blown up by Palestinain bombers"... For example, in February, CNN's web site, "mentioned the 'killing of two Israelis' by a suicide bomber...but there were no names of the 15-year old victim, no details about the horrific damage done to other teens by flying nails embedded in the bomb, and not even a mention that one of the two dead was a US citizen." Palestinian bombers, on the other hand, tend to get more vivid treatment, often with endearing photos and warm, human-interest touches."
Furthermore, what about other stories that have spun out of the crisis:
The Palestinians, according to one monk, entered the Church of the Nativity by shooting off the locks. What do you think the journalistic response would have been if Christians forcibly took over a Mosque?
"The media has also given short shrift to the startling rise of anti-Israel and antisemitic sentiment in Europe and the apparent inability of the French government to do much about the attacks on synagogues. Could rising anti-Israel sentiment in Europe be partly driven by a fear of violence from its Muslim immigrant population?
"Another unreported topic is the new alliance on US campuses between Muslim miliotants and conventional hate-America, hate-Israel lefties."
Oddly, "human rights groups are calling for a divestment campaign against Israel like the one that targeted racist South Africa. Israel equal South Africa? Get serious. An open and democratic nation, Israel deserves our respect - and honest coverage from the media."
