Why is the Super Bowl able to command the entire nation's attention

Exactly. One night to commit to the event, not 7+ days like the World Series or NBA Finals. The Super Bowl culture of this country just makes it a fun day to hang out, drink, pig out on junk food, etc. Plus, it's normally over by 10pm or earlier.

I think the kentucky derby has been drawing a fairly decent crowd throughout the years, even though its a "series" type event (triple crown) its still the biggest race of the year in a lot of ways and news orgs, people, parties, commercials, all get geared up for it.

You know with every passing year the average 40 time at the combine decreases? I'd like to see some rugby 40 times.

Hey, nothing against the sport of rugby, but the players in the NFL are some of the best athletes in the world, period. Running the 40 in 4.2 seconds and still benching 225 10+ times is damn impressive.
