Why is the next iPhone always referred to as iPhone5?

Because there's no confirmation it will be 4G.

Remember, Apple decided to go with EDGE in the original iPhone, even though 3G was pretty mature at that point. What makes you think they'll do 4G now?

Because it's going to be the 5th iPhone, and it hasn't been officially named, let alone announced, yet? Now doesn't that make even more sense???

Yea I don't get why people just can't follow the common naming scheme. No one knows if it's going to have 4G but it's going to be the 5th generation.

it will be the 5th iPhone, so iPhone 5, right?

It could be a 4G model, but I guess this depends on how the other makers release 4G handsets, and also if the infrastructure is in place. Do Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc. all have complete 4G?

We can call it the iPhone 4G so we can call the next one that comes out the 4GS.

Because then they couldn't wait 6 months and release the iPhone 5 4g.

It's quite well known that Apple releases phones yearly, pretty much on the nose. I sense you were merely having a go at some Apple bashing, but next time try to have it make sense.

Kind of funny you should say that, a LOT of people I know call it the 4G already, they kind of just took the 4G marketing from other companies and slapped it onto the iphone in their minds or something.

I think it is because, as others have said, at the very least, we know that it is the fifth iPhone. We don't know if it will be 4G.

i was just correcting his timeline of iPhone products... since it was way wrong...

I think you missed my point. My post wasn't intended to be a historically accurate timeline, it's intended to illustrate how most people intuitively think.

99% of consumers are thinking "iPhone 3... 4... 5..."

not "iPhone 3g, 3gs, 4, 4g..."

That answers the question of why most people are referring to the next iPhone as "iPhone 5".
