Why is the minimum wage in Oregon and Washington State so high?

National minimum wage $5.15

California's minimum wage $6.75 (this is justified due to the high cost of living)

Oregon's $7.50

Washington State $7.63

While it may be more expensive to live in the Pacific northwest compared to the south it is still reasonable and there are states with higher costs of living then both Oregon and Washington state with a lower minimum wage, like Virginia and New York.

What has this got to do with my post? I was asking why the Pacific Northwest has the highest minimum wages in the country when the cost of living is moderate.

So just say that there shouldn't be a minimum wage, and we can start the debate there. If you agree there should be one, then it's reasonable to increase it at least every 10-15 years.

please, I dont want this to get into a debate over minimum wage increases. I simply want to know why the Pacific northwest has such high minimum wages.

Because Oregon and Washington are trying to get as close to socialism/communism as possible?

Let's just get this out of the way.

Bill Clinton lied about receiving oral sex. This is all Clinton's fault.

p.s. we don't (can't) pump our own gas in Oregon.

Because the lawmakers (and people) in those states want it that way. Maybe they realize that it's difficult to survive on the Federal minimum wage...

Median house price in the Seattle area is $400,000 so at $5 an hour you can afford a nice cardboard box and 40oz of happiness.

And Oregon has no sales tax.

Though I don't see why that makes a difference in this case.

However, the cost of living here IS very high, contrary to what you may think.

Ok, I guess for home buyers.

I was looking at Craigslist at apartments there and there seemed to be many 1 and 2 bedrooms for around $1000. Im paying $1100 for a 2 bedroom apartment in Virginia and next month ill be paying $1500 a month for a 1 bedroom in California.

You shouldn't be doing a lot of things but what people are doing isn't sustainable.
