Why is the internet so slow in Mandrake 9.0?

Just installed Mandrake 9 two days ago and I've noticed that I'm getting horrible thoroughput versus my experiences with Windows.

I'm on a college campus ethernet connection and I'm used to getting 5-6 Mbits both up AND down. Now I'm getting a little less than 400 Kbits down and I'm not sure of the upstream.

It's the default configuration, and I'm using mozilla as my browser. My NIC was detected automatically by Mandrake so I'm assuming everything is working okay...as a note, it's an onboard NIC, not a PCI.

Any suggestions?

Check the nic settings and hard drive settings. Measure the speed with FTP, not http and see what you are getting.

With FTP it's still only about 40 KB per second (or a bit more on a good transfer). I posted the same thing over in the linux newbie forums and they told me to run ifconfig...here's the results:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr EDITED OUT
inet addr:***.***.***.*** Bcast:***.***.***.*** Mask:255.255.252.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:518074 errors:1617988 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:1617988
TX packets:20591 errors:1593 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:1593
collisions:79161 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:180681641 (172.3 Mb) TX bytes:4513288 (4.3 Mb)
Interrupt:18 Base address:0xdcc0 Memory:ff6e0000-0

Seems like there's a heck of a lot of errors. Any ideas on how to fix it? I never used to get any dropped packets or errors in windows as far as I know - and the Mandrake Control Center has the onboard ethernet chip detected perfectly.

Well, truthfully I was just going on the assumption that it did, since it simply works. But let's see...I'll take a look at the dell website to get the actual chipset.

It's an Intel 845G chipset and it has onboard gigabit lan...the Mandrake Control Center lists it as "82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller."

perhaps the driver just isnt quite "there" yet. then again i dont think they'd put a driver that messed up into the production kernel. then again maybe they would.

when i look at ifconfig i see "errors: 0"

Well, it doesn't matter anymore - I'm back on XP. With school going on I just can't afford to have crap Internet access. Maybe I'll try again to install RH or Mandrake during the summer or something, but I need a reliable computer...and right now, Windows XP offers the only solution for me.

Thanks for all the help though.

I have an intel 845G motherboard and have had problems using linux with it (Mandrake 8.2- runs fine on an older computer). My searches indicated that many people have had problems with the 845G and Linux (although mostly video).

Video's not a problem for me; I'm using an ATI Radeon VE so that I can get DVI-video to my flat panel monitor. Oh well, the internet is nice and fast again.

I wonder if the nic was set to the wrong speed, or half duplex instead of full-duplex...

My connection is a little slower in Debian. Something on the order of 5% or so.

I'm running unstable though, which could explain it.

Good luck fixing it. You should try a more linux-oriented forum or mailing list.
