Why is the ACLU disliked?

Granted some of the issues they stand behind seem almost laughable, but arent thier intentions right? I mean they stand beside the KKK and the NAACP at the same time, isnt about defending right to freedom no matter what? What do you all think?

They are hypocritical. While they won't hesitate to jump all over First Amendment issues, when have they ever stepped forward to defend the Second Amendment? They pick and choose their battles based on their own agenda.

Do you think that is their objective or could it be a matter of cases brought to them? In that, I mean, we all know that civil rights are staunchly defended by the ACLU usually in co-operation with the NAACP, is it because the NAACP is there with them or just a "favorite" cause? If it is about constituancy them why doesnt the NRA join hands with the ACLU?

Its one thing to defend rights and civil liberties but its another to defend the right and civil liberties of those that seek to takes away what is guaranteed under Bill of Rights. Groups like the NAACP want try and get equal footing (well most of the time but lets stay on-topic). Groups like the KKK, the Aryan Nation, and NAMBLA seek to violate the liberties and takes away rights.

A great philospther once said, "I many no like what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it." (was it Descartes? Damn these early mornings) but do you really want to stand by racists, child molesters, outright wackos, and misc. from the lunatic fringe? Does the ACLU realize that by standing up for those groups they may be slowly chipping away at their own cause? Yea its admirable (NOT!!!) that they stand up for hate mongers but do they realize they should any of those racist morons come to power they would not hesitate to throw all those ACLU people in jail? We all know how big Hitler was on free speech right?

They have strayed away from their original mission of guarantee the rights of the average citizen and become no better than any other Washington Lobby group seeking to advance an agenda and buy dirty politicians.

The ACLU defends the rights of views to be expressed....not the views themselves. That's why the have defended the Nazi party, Ku Klux Klan, NAMBLA, and the Black Panthers.

Whether you disagree or agree with someone does not allow you to keep them from expressing their views.

When you start making exceptions to freedom of expression....one at first...then a few more later...when does it stop? When everyone (or idea) that you don't like is forcibly kept silent? Should due process of law not be allowed for certain "undesirables?"

Maybe in Nazi Germany or Communist China....but not in America!

People should be allowed to express themselves but it should not be at the expense of someone else's liberties. What groups like the KKK and NAMBLA are doing is advocating CRIMINAL activity. I have no problems with someone saying, "Windogg is an idiot" or "I think Windogg has the intelectual capacity of a retared mongoose" He that's what first ammendment was setup for. So people can say, "I hate the King/President/Fuhrer" without the fear of getting thrown in jail. I do begin to have a problems when people start saying things like, "Let's lynch Windogg because I hate people with size 9 shoes" or "Lets rape Windogg because I'm a sick bastard that also has a tilt towards attacking the helpless." If the ACLU was defending someone thrown in jail for selling shirts that say, "I think Clinton/Dole is a horny bastard" then I would be all for them. They get no sympathies when they get their sorry ass thrown in jail for selling t-shirts that say, "Lets *** harm *** Clinton/Dole." Notice I didn't use the word "kill" because it is a crime to threaten the President of the United States or anyone with bodily harm.

You never really believe these people exist until you see them with your own eyes. Several years the Klan was making a big push on Long Island. I was staying with a friend when a rally went through town. Its scary when you hear people talk about &quot;getting rid of n!ggers and how we must take back from those Jews.&quot; While no one stated &quot;kill&quot; or &quot;rob&quot; specifically, the rhetoric was such that it implied doing harm to someone else. Still makes my skin crawl think out it. Up until then I was the &quot;let anyone say whatever they want&quot; type but that changed me.

Yes it is. I genuinly hate the guy and hopes he is out. Unfortunatley the moron is still here because I saw hig ugly mug this morning. If he wants to file a lawsuit for defamation than so be it. I can backup all my arguments without the ACLU. I'm not going to hide behind the first amendment either. I even broke a few laws when I said I wanted some aliens to come down and anal probe him and how I wanted to hit him over the head. Should it happen I WILL and SHOULD be held criminally responsible. Why should the Klan and NAMBLA wash their hands of what heppened by saying it was individual inititative. BS, it was their crap that was the proximate cause of events like the murder of Jeffrey Curly in Cambridge. Two members of NAMBLA raped and murder a young boy, suffed his body in a trunk and dumped it into a river. Their defense was that were practicing what their beleived in. That stuff just pisses me off.

So am I guilty? Hell yea. I'm ready to face my punsihment should someone bring it on.

While I agree in principle with the ACLU actions, I have concerns that they would defend the rights of those who would yell fire in a crowded theater. The NAMBLA defense is real close to the line in my opinion.

I support the ACLU's fight to protect the 1st amendment even when
the ACLU represent's the KKK etc. By allowing the KKK to express
themselves, the public will see how idiotic they are. I have confidence in the public as a whole to make rational judgments.


Oh, and the reason you don't see the ACLU defending the NRA is because
the NRA are a bunch of wussies that are to proud to ask for the
ACLU's help. The ACLU seeks out cases, but most of their cases

403: You argument hold water if our society was fully open minded like you. I grew up in NYC too and I am very glad to have been exposed to so many cultures and diverse groups. I am very sure they people like yourself will always look upon groups like the KKK as a wackos. Unfortunatly, no everyone is like you. Take for example, John Rocker, NYC's favorite ball player. We all know how highly he values diversity. While his comments were more idiotic as opposed to threatening. It still disturbing to realize that there are many more like him. I personally don't care if people go around calling others n1ggers, ch1nks, sp1cs, gooks, kikes, or rednecks since it only shows their ignorance. I probably agree with 80% of their positions, as do most Americans, but that last 20% just rubs me way wrong.

Well its america Orenry, things are gonna rub someone the wrong way and I say god bless this country for its freedom of ideas and speech, movement, privacy and anything else in the bill of rights, yeah, I don't agree with everything the ACLU stands behind but I can appreciate them for keeping the rights in the hands of the people.

I would love to see tha ACLU take up all the amendments, especially the 2nd as I am a fierce gun advocte myself, I just wonder why the NRA and the ACLU cant work together on that?
