why is the 787 so scary?

Or are you talking about the golden age when only the elite got to fly regularly and flight attendant (or should I say stewardess because that's what they were in those days) was a glamorous job.

and back on OP's point. The safety record of the 787 is perfect so far, no fatal crashes. Safety systems are working as intended.

Really I'm thinking more of what I would call the 2nd golden age from around 1980 to 2001 when the price to fly dropped dramatically but the airlines still offered great service. Like you I would not hesitate to fly on a 787 and have no concerns regarding its airworthiness.

In the late 80's, I once flew back to Chicago from Frisco on a flight that had more stewardesses than passengers.

Can't tell you about the level of service because I just pulled the arm rests out and laid down across three seats and slept the whole way.

Didn't feel elite. Felt more like business travel.

Then again, its hard to compare the experience then to the cattle call that most flights are now.

Car accidents are pretty horrible. So is getting hit by a car as a pedestrian. Shark attacks can ruin your whole day. Lightning strikes can kill you. Storms can drown you. Vending machines are really dangerous when they fall on you. Bottom line is that going outdoors is scary. Then again if you stay indoors you might be attacked by bugs or get carbon monoxide poisoning. You might drown in the bathtub.

Major difference between all of those and an airline accident is that when a plane goes down, there is a 90% chance you will have a few minutes to ponder your ensuing death before you hit the ground.

I used to book wide body red-eyes for that reason.

Lack of passengers; easy to find an empty row and grab a pillow/blanket and get 4-5 hours sleep.

i flew the 787 in business class from den to nrt, the cabin was very quiet and the seat very comfortable. got a decent amount of sleep too. it was a great experience and the windows are f'ing awesome.

Why this thread now? I follow Airliners.net and they haven't been complaining about any 787 news as of late. There hasn't been any bad 787 news as of last. *Knocks on wood*

All of the B news these days revolves around the 77X and their union debacle.

There was a JAL flight that had a warning light go on about the battery. Didn't appear to harm anything from the little info I could find.
