Why is suicide not legal?

Sucide is illegal because most people see it as a irrational way to solve problems. I don't care about people that much that I am going to stop them from killing themselves, it's not my life.

Isn't the problem of suicide the ultimate philosophical problem? Or something like that....
 
beats the hell out of me. But it does provide for some humor, like when the police shoot and kill someone to stop them from committing suicide.

I am sure there are many much more rational solutions to solve the issuse of not having childeren. Ever heard of a condom?
 
Suicide is illegal because murder is illegal. Abortion is legal because a fetus is not a person.
 
If done right, who cares if suicide is illegal? That being said, who gets jail time for attempted suicide?

The reason suicide is illegal is the same reason why the right is trying to make abortion illegal - cause that's a major tenet of their religion, and they feel compelled to force it on everyone else.

Murder is the killing of another person... suicide is a separate issue.

I think suicide is illegal because of a long moral social tradition derived from Christian-based society.

Is that all you think about (and of course letting the elderly die)? Stop thread crapping.

On the topic, the laws against suicide (assisted / non-assisted) mostly come from religious dogma. It is considered a sin.

I believe it is a personal choice that can seriously affect those left behind. For someone who it terminally ill, I see no problems with assisted suicide, if they choose that option (I watched my wife waste away from cancer over 2 months and would wish that on no one). As far as your average teenage suicide, intervention / counselling should be a first choice.
 
Christians have always thought Suicide is a mortal sin. It is technically murder. Use to be if you committed suicide you could not be buried in the church graveyard. If you die committing a mortal sin then your are doomed to hell so to speak. This is not directed at any one person or even you the reader or writer. Just some random thoughts on the subject.

Suicide is illegal because of the ancient religious belief that you are committing a sin that you cannot ask forgiveness for afterwards. Hence, they were "saving" you from an eternity of damnation.

It is a sin to take the life that god gave you. To reject that gift is sin ... or something like that.

I'm all for legal suicide as long as the person is accurately informed about their physical and mental state, in a rational frame of mind, and not subject to pressure from others.

Also because lost on census count. Each live body = $$$ on paper.
 
Here is a different way to look at this

Every person is an investment, society provides everything for that person, directly or indirectly. Most of your time goes into paying society back, again directly and indirectly. So if you decide to bail out on your leftover payments society makes it illegal.

But really, I think its actually our taboo of death which is the main reason. I mean look at many other cultures, death is accepted and celebrated there.
 
The reason suicide is illegal, IMO, is because of this. If you sincerely want to kill yourself, nobody can stop you. What are they going to do, arrest your dead body? However, if they're able to stop you then that most likely means that you weren't completely sure you wanted to do it. I mean, let's face it, you want to die then there are pretty easy ways of doing it that nobody can stop. By making it illegal, they're able to take the people who really weren't sure they wanted to, but thought they'd try, and put them someplace where they can think about it a little more with some "professional" help. I think it's just there as a type of safety net to help people who really didn't want to kill themselves and just had a bad day.
