Why is silent PC all the buzz?

Well I'm just curious why everyone loves silent PCs it seems recently. I've known people who have used quiet fans for few years but it wasn't really that popular. Now its high on people's lists.

I use common parts and don't find the noise that bothersome. Do others find it that bad?? I don't even notice it unless I think of it really. It's just kind of faded into the background. And I focus quite a lot around my computer when programming and mind-consuming things and it hasn't bothered me yet.

I sleep in the same room with 4 towers fans going 24/7 a few feet from me and it has never impaired my sleep to my knowledge.

Maybe I'm just inept to it 😛

Before anyone says something I'm not hearing impaired either. I've been tested and my ears can hear upwards of 18 kHz

I'm not really bothered by it, since I sleep next to the drone of a minifridge, but my roommate says he can hear my computer at night. Some people are just real sensitive to sound - he can pick out the name of a song when I'm wearing headphones on medium volume.

I can't sleep in total silence anymore since college when we had a mini-fridge in the room. I always have a 12 inch fan running at night now.

I dunno, maybe because computers are leaning more towards gaming/HTPC roles, and it's nice not to hear anything during the silent parts of gamin/movies

Lol I hope I'm not that way after this year is finished

Jeff7181 yes I feel the same in the summer
I take time to readjust in the fall after I turn off the big honkin fans in my room
It is weird not to hear them turn
Kind of grows on me at least.

I think it's partly because the hum of the fan is a little soothing, and also because it drowns out other sounds... so I can't hear my cats scratching in the litter box or running up and down the stairs or a car drive by.

I can't sleep unless it's almost 100% silent, so my PC has to be pretty quiet for me to sleep with it on...still a bit too noisy though.

I listen to music while I work, and it's nice to have as little added noise as possible.

I've thought about splitting my desktop machine into 2 - a silent, semi-slow "work" machine (perhaps a mini-ITX with fanless power supply brick), and a noisier gaming machine.

Or the people locked in my basement begging me to let them out... oh... wait... was that outloud?😱

silent PCs are for all the big wussies.

As said by people who need to "boost" their masculinity with fancy cars or huge towers full of blazing fans....

It's more complicated, more challenging, and MUCH more rewarding to create a PC that's screaming fast but almost completely silent....

Think of it as a "silent killer" and maybe it won't seem so "wussy" to you.
Much, much more pleasant to use.

You must be the same guy who drives that honda civic with the 6" exhaust pipe neglecting a muffler- in fact buying hardware to do the exact OPPOSITE of a muffler? *sigh*

My personal theory is that in the begining, loud fans were used to eek out more performance. Noise was directly ascosciated with cooling, and thus overclocking, and was critical to speed gains sought after by almost many.

Today we don't have the same 'Demanding apps' that require every last ounce of power be squezed out of the CPU to enjoy them. Today most CPUs are well capable of running every and any game on the market, and power is less of an issue.

When we don't need to overclock like mad just to get desirable results, people turned to getting adaquate speed, while still maintianing acceptable performance.

I think the overclocker crowd just got tired of sleeping next to a 7KRPM Delta fan and decided with the megafast CPUs of today (which have no problems running anything but the most demanding apps) maybe it was time for a little peace and quiet, in exchange for that extra 5% speed a roaring fan buys you.

i can't stand the sound of the fans whirling at night. Although im not a picky sleeper, i'd built my current rig with less loud in mind. My computer temps could be lower (sitting at 37C CPU IDLE and 26C SYSTEM) i don't think it's worth the extra fan noise.

I remember the excitement of getting my first 120mm fan, pulling out that dremel........then I turned it on!

I agree w/Bluemax up there, silent and fast is where it's at!

Obviously, noisy pc's only cause a problem if the user isnt focussing on the task at hand, for example, just using it to play MP3's.
I do use my PC as a Media Center too, so it would be problematic if it was loud.

Besides, it only costs a few £/$ for a bit of bliss 🙂
