Why is sending a letter to China so expensive?

Lol... I don't quite understand either. I buy stuff off ebay all the time that come from HK for like $2 with free shipping... That's for an actual item too, not just paper. HKPS > USPS ?

Has to go through many Chinese customs agents to make sure you aren't telling their citizens something the Chinese government doesn't want them to know.

Thats because on the way out, customs doesn't care. Only on the way in

When I lived in China my mom sent me a couple packages and it wasn't too expensive, less than $50 each time.

For packages, not letters.

I wonder if sending it as a certified letter jacks up the price?

Hey, let's have some fun. If we can figure out the identities of any spammers from China, we'll send them certified letters about the planned revolt. That's one way to get China to deal with their spammers. 😀 Follow-up question - How about India? Russia? Are their letters read as well?

Visit meritline.com ... all their stuff comes from China. It takes 1 1/2 weeks to get stuff to me (US East Coast) ... which is not much more than getting stuff from US West Coast ! Best of all ... they charge free shipping. I got an Apple IPOD cable for 99 cents from China ... free shipping ! They probably piggyback on the daily Walmart water shuttle.

Fixed for you.

This is what it looks like once the person it is issued to gets it:

Because China wants to keep imports low and exports high? How else do you explain it costing $2 for a Xbox battery pack shipped from China but then to send one to China costs $40.

Prices are high because they have to personally inspect all packages for technology they can rip off.

It dirt cheap for them to send stuff to the US but to send something to them is $$$. Makes thing unfair in the widget peddling industry.

Certified letter with some sort of tracking..

UPS - $60
FedEx - $60-80
USPS - $30

Its a fucking piece of paper damn.

So stick your letter in a bottle...drive to the ocean and throw it in. let us know how soon the free method gets it delivered.
