Why is prostitution immoral?

I don't live nor was born in the US, but it seems amongst most Western countries it is one of the most anti-prostitution (and conservative also, but in some regions more than others).

But is prostitution "immoral" due to religious reasons? It may be empty sex, but so what? Friends with benefits is just empty sex, so are one night stands. I don't believe in moral dictates really, but is there a reason why it's immoral?

i agree.

at least you know what you are getting (the clap, aids etc.lol) up front. sure you can go to a club and spend a few hundred bucks and still not get any or more (and still get stds').

One reason often given as to why prostitution is immoral is that it tends to involve coercion. In most cases, people do not freely decide to become prostitutes. In some cases, they are driven to the profession by desperation and a lack of other opportunities for employment. In other cases, they are forced into prostitution by others. In some cases, people are enslaved and forced to be prostitutes.

Such coercion is clearly immoral, especially the sort that involves slavery.

However, some people freely and knowingly chose to be prostitutes. In these cases, the coercion argument obviously fails.

It might be argued that no one would freely chose to be a prostitute and that all people are coerced into doing so. For example, feminists often refer to the coercive power of the patriarchy that is so powerful and subtle that women often do not even know they are being coerced. If these feminists are right, then all (or almost all) prostitution in a patriarchal society would be immoral.

Of course, if we accept this sort of view, then it would entail that almost all jobs are immoral. After all, everyone who is not the top of the power and economic hierarchy will be coerced into working by those above them and by the very nature of capitalism.

The second main moral concern about prostitution is that it is exploitive. As presented stereotypically in movies, prostitutes typically work for a pimp or a madam who takes a sizable cut of their income. This is exploitive because the prostitute is doing the hard work while the pimp/madam is taking an unfair share of the proceeds.

It can be replied that such exploitation is acceptable when it is withing a certain degree. So, for example, the exploitation of the prostitutes by their pimps is exploitive because he takes far too much.

Now, if a degree of exploitation is acceptable, then prostitution that involves exploitation in this range would be acceptable. For example, working for a generous pimp or madam would be a morally acceptable job, on par with working for Starbucks. Once again, capitalism and prostitution can be bedfellows (and so often are).

Of course, if all exploitation is wrong, then almost all jobs would be immoral.

A third reason that prostitution is regarded as immoral is that it is supposed to be degrading to the prostitute.

I believe it to be somewhat immoral yet I can't say I'm for anti-prostitution laws. For what its worth, I'm not religious.

Morality is whatever we decide it to be, it doesn't need a basis in any fact. Generally our culture has some hangups about sex and I think they come through in these anti-prostitution stances.

While there is of course a huge difference between legality and morality, many of the reasons people use for why prostitution should be illegal are made worse by the fact it is illegal.

The U.S. is infected with Rich Radical Religious Republicans.

They claim to be pure and family values while hiding the fact they are Gay themselves and frequently use Prostitutes.

It's in the U.S. news all the time.

You probably won't be satisfied with the answer.

It being degrading and objectifying to both people involved is a moral issue.

You're not really asking about morality, probably. You're asking about legality. Watch the libertarians rush in with the 'consenting adults, not the state's business' legal argument.

There are many such 'moral issues'. Why can't you buy cats and dogs for dinner, if you are so inclined, while you can buy pigs who are not clearly different on moral grounds?

There are peripheral issues - such as the exploitation of the prostitute's poverty, or the high rates of drug abuse and other crimes associated with prostitution.

Of course it's not illegal a few places, such as rural Nevada and Amsterdam's district.

Funny, though, even in that red light district, most of the prostitues are foreign women from places like Africa, being exploited, not an idealic 'free people exchanging'.

This isn't to say there isn't an argument for legalizing prostition on the grounds liberatrians would cite; it's answering your question.

This is more about the evolution of the theory of government of more people challenging it having a role in such issues. Most Americans still oppose legalizing it, apparently.

San Francisco - a place expected to be more open to it - put it on the ballot; I hesitantly supported it; it did not pass.

Why did I support it? It's not as if having it illegal prevents it, in a pretty sordid market, including pimps; perhaps legalizing it could help with safety and other benefits.

There are also the financial issues, reducing the law enforcement cost and possibly creating taxable income.

There is some appeal to the 'freedom' argument, but I disagree with the libertarians' one-sided enthusiasm for it, there's a tyranny of the poverty and addiction driving most of it.

Does the prostitute necessarily find it degrading?

This. I think something retarded like 98% of all prostitutes have been molested as children.

If you ask any woman if she want to have payed sex with strangers, even those that she is not attracted to... Most will say no. Some will say yes , but why ? Free choice ? Mental issues ? Perhaps it has to do with incest ? Growing up in an environment with low moral values and honor values ? I think Drugs, incest, forced prostitution are 3 major factors. Some female students might turn call girl to pay for the study. But why can some women do it and most women not ? Just look at the background. That is the key.

I can also turn it around : Would you enjoy having sex with a woman knowing that the only reason she sells her body so easily to you is because she might very well have been abused as a child ? That is a huge turn off. I would think.
Or knowing that you are number 29 today ?

Or knowing that she is trying to lure you in, in order to prevent being beat up by the pimp ?

There are a lot of Ukrainian girls and women forced to work in the sex business in Europe but also in Islamic countries(double standards ftl) . If they return alive to their family, they are scared for life. Some 20 something girls describe it as having died inside for having sex with people they do not want to be with...

This. It is not an absolute, yet it is an impossibility to nullify prostitution, and when driven underground, such coercive and overtly criminal behaviour becomes more common place.

Prostitution, by itself, may not be deemed immoral. The immorality that it often fosters is by being it being absolutely deemed criminal. Criminalising prostitution is immoral.

It wouldn't be a problem if most prostitutes weren't being forced into it on some level or mistreated earlier in their life. John's are exploiting these women whether they think they are or not.

Women don't wake up one day and think "Hey, I want to get fucked by random fat disgusting men all day to pay for my heroin addiction or my rent!"

Most do it for the money.

I simply don't see why prostitution is unethical. Not all prostitutes are abused, not all are coerced into it. The only logical deduction I can see is religious morality.

I think it's ridiculous and downright tyrannical that there are Federal laws against Prostitution. The fact that it's illegal makes the neocons look even dumber. That is, Bin Laden can't hate us for our culture.

I would say since morality is relative, moral judgments don't make sense, but I agree it's just uptight conservatism ultimately.

In our patriarchal society the standards are set to limit the power and opportunity that women have. By taking away their power to engage in sex for profit they control a method that women can use to obtain freedom.

That's one way of looking at it. Lol

We are not animals. We should strive to rise above this lower level thinking.

Do you think we're fucking plants or something? Of course we're animals, with the same emotions and instincts that all higher animals have. We have a thin layer of abstract rationality that allows some people to think/believe/pretend we're these unique magical beings with "immortal souls" that were divinely created by a benevolent deity who both "created the universe" and "loves us".

IMO there's nothing immoral at all about prostitution, so long as it's between genuinely consenting adults.
