Why is PECI disabled?

I am a n00b, I just built my first system a couple of days ago (specs in my signature). I am now adjusting some BIOS Settings and came across a setting to enable or disable PECI (Asus P5B Deluxe MoBo).

Every recommendation or example I have seen for BIOS settings disables PECI. But from what I understand it is a new way that the Core Duo processors have of communicating temperature and other environmental variables using dedicated bus. It sounds like good thing to have. Is there an disadvantage to having this enabled? Is there an advantage?

PECI is short for Intel's Platform Environment Control Interface and is a form of fan control intended to save energy and reduce fan noise.

Most overclockers have no use for automatic fan controls and prefer to control the fans themselves (or as in my case, run them all at full blast 😉). Sometimes these fan control "features" interfere with overclocking and there is no absolutely no harm in turning them off.

I will leave them off indeed. 🙂 I guess the name sounds fancy enough that I thought it was something important 😉

I have been playing with the BIOS Settings quite a bit and learning fast! Thanks for the help!
