why is Obama going to Iraq?

if he's going to do what he's going to do regardless of what he finds in Iraq... what's the point of wasting the jet fuel on going there in person?

Why do you go see movies? Didn't you read Shakespeare and all that crap? Every movie is essentially the same thing!

Now let's see, I am going to spend my next few minutes of my life doing a cost benefits analysis of a trip to Iraq by Obama, and I am going to limit that analysis to the parameters defined by the OP, namely that Obama has made up his mind on Iraq and the cost of the jet fuel to get him there. I will naturally have to exclude from this analysis all the real factors for his going and focus exclusively of these two totally irrelevant limitations. No, I don't think so.

He goes for the same reason McCain goes there, so he can get some cheap publicity, talk to generals, maybe see an ordinary Iraq or two from a long distance away, and then come home and say I know all about Iraq.

Quite frankly the time could be better spent in almost any other way, but until you see it in person, we, the American people, demand the candidate make the pilgrimage to the green zone. And then we can divert a few thousand troops from real jobs so they can makes sure the visiting poobah does not get shot by the grateful Iraqis.

Why does Obama read books? He's just going to do what he's going to do regardless.

so he's going to Iraq for relaxing entertainment?

He probably reads books for reasons other then relaxation and entertainment.

Another cynic who has life all figured out.

probably. either way, the analogy seems flawed.

it's more like publishing an essay in a major national newspaper about why you hate a book, based on third party reports, and that you're going to dislike the book even after you read it, and then finally reading the book determined that you're going to stick with your original position not to like it.

if you refuse to go into something with an open mind and don't even leave yourself room to change your mind if you wanted to based on what you find in a given situation... what's the point?

didn't he ever read green eggs and ham?

All three network anchors going along with him for the entire trip. McCain's overseas trips barely got a blurb. Granted, McCain has made alot of trips to Afghanistan and Iraq already while Obama hasn't been since 2006.

But at least the media will stay at home and report the event from a safe distance.---but edit in inconvenienced by Queasy who points out all three network anchors will hitch hike a free ride with Obama. But larger point still made, the bulk of the media will still stay home.

I have no idea why the media is more interested in a presidential candidate visiting Iraq then a presidential candidate visiting Canada and Colombia. I mean that's just crazy. Especially after the McCain camp made such a big deal out of the fact that Obama hadn't visited Iraq. It's a complete mystery to me too. Must be the 'librul media' at work again.

I do love how McCain makes a big stink about Obama not having visited Iraq, puts out a whole load of media releases about the fact, and then is shocked... shocked and outraged when the media actually pays attention to the issue.

McCain visited Iraq and Israel back in March with barely a word from the media...at least in comparison to the network anchor circus that will follow Obama around.

And now what could possibly have been going on in March having to do with politics that the country was more interested in? Was there some sort of hugely contentious and interesting primary going on or something? It's so hard to remember.

Here's a hint for you, the news reports on the most interesting thing going on at the moment. An exciting primary is more interesting then McCain waddling around Iraq. In the middle of July there's shit going on. Hell, the front page of CNN earlier today had as the TOP STORY how people were waiting in line to go see The Dark Knight. This would not be headline news in November.

Either that or the 'librul media' just wants Democrats to win so they can turn America socialist and have the government abort christian babies at our taxpayer funded madrassas.

Even CNN has noticed the disparity of coverage:

KURTZ (voice-over): The three broadcast network anchors will travel halfway around the world, lured by an offer of interviews with the candidate, with Katie Couric, Brian Williams, and Charlie Gibson getting an exclusive on successive nights. That means the CBS, NBC, and ABC evening newscasts will do exactly what the Obama camp wants -- use their big megaphones to certify the trip as a major campaign event. The television chatter is already starting, including on CNN, which will also be all over the story.

BILL SCHNEIDER, CNN SENIOR POLITICAL ANALYST (on-camera, file video): Obama will shortly be heading to the Middle East, and intends to show how much he knows about the threats the U.S. faces.

CHRYSTIA FREELAND, FINANCIAL TIMES (file video from MSNBC): The economy is in bad shape, but I think this trip by Obama is risky, but brilliant.

KURTZ: Of course, it's always big news when a presumed presidential nominee travels abroad, right? Wrong -- John McCain has taken three trips abroad to Europe, the Middle East, Canada, Colombia, and Mexico in the last four months. No anchors tagged along. In fact, some broadcast and cable networks didn't even send correspondents on some of these trips. The imbalance doesn't end there. Obama has received more than twice as much air time as McCain on the network evening newscasts since last month, although more coverage doesn't always mean positive coverage. Obama, who is on the cover of Newsweek again this week, has been on Time or Newsweek's cover a dozen times in the last three years, more than twice the amount of McCain. And in some venues, Obama and his wife Michelle on the cover of Us Weekly, Obama and his family on Access Hollywood. It's not even close.

KURTZ (on-camera): With Obama expected to draw big crowds in Europe next week, McCain may struggle to stay in the headlines. Now, journalists say much of this is driven by the novelty factor. Obama is a new player on the world stage, while McCain has been making international trips for decades. But at what point does that become unfair? Wolf?

You can do you 'librul media' schtick all you want but the fact is Obama gets more coverage, especially more positive coverage' than McCain.

So? I told you the media reports on what is more interesting. McCain is so boring that Stephen Colbert was able to make a new green screen challenge around making the guy actually exciting to watch and listen to. If both candidates were equally interesting, you would have a point... but they aren't.

Also, why should both candidates get equal positive coverage? This is another one of those ingrained fallacies in right wing thinking that in order to be fair news needs to treat both candidates as if they were equal, even if they aren't. Obama is younger, more energetic, more photogenic, a better speaker, has better media relations people, holds huge exciting rallies, has more excited followers, is winning the race currently, and is raising money at a rate never before seen in US politics. None of these things necessarily mean he would be a better president then McCain, but they sure as shit mean that he will attract more news media, and more positive coverage.

People who are under the delusion the media is liberal immediately jump on the idea of bias as soon as they see some perceived disparity without looking at more rational reasons why things might be the way they are first.

Well duh! Obama is a tidal wave. I guess so. Who makes news, some dude carving a loaf or the brand new bread slicing machine?

But then you get into the question over whether or not the news is reporting the hype or contributing to the hype.
