Sorry guys, but if the sole reason you went with a 6800 card over any other card is the advertised built in VP, than I would definately bitch to Nvidia. If you thought of it as just a bonus, then your not missing anything. I bought my 6800's because I knew they would kick some major arse for my gaming experience.

Seriously though, a lot of you are making it seem like you can't do things that you were able to do before.
You can still watch movies, you can still encode decode the very same way you did before. At least I know I can. But, nvidia made a mistake at some point. They are only human just like you and I. Just like ATI makes mistakes. SH!T happens but I think you are all being way to harsh on nvidia. If I were you, I would stop posted wasted threads in here about this and start a class action suit against nvidia if your so torn up about this and ask for restitution from them. Or, just return your card and get a 6600 series card. Whats the biggie? I know, I know.... I'm not you and your not me. Good point.

Good luck to everyone who got screwed and I hope this horrible nightmare is resolved.

:::: damn sarcasm unit going into overdrive ::::: /pulls plug

So basically if you bought a car.. you bought it to drive it.. and as long as it drives thats okay. It doesnt matter that your GPS doesnt work that you PAID for and wanted, the cd player only works in some models, but the tape player works so its all good right keys? I mean lets face it you bought the car so that you could drive it.

Last time I checked, we were talking about video cards. Not cars. You are getting waaaay to bent over this. If my GPS didn't work, I would drive my car to the dealership so they can fix it or answer a recall.
If you would bother to notice, half the people driving their cars have no idea about every single option on their cars. Some people drive around for years without even realizing that they have a nifty little button for trunk release, but they have been using their key to open it all along. Or that they actaully have heated mirrors but still use the scraper because they have no idea.

AND don't forget an attributing factor here. The Video Processor is a NEW item. How many cars were sold with bad wiring harnesses? Chrysler was King of this during the late 80's. They would be in the shop every other week for faulty dashboard lights or fuses that keep blowing. But they still sold these cars anyway.

Nvidia is offering the driver and a paid for decoder to access the functionality of the VP. It must have cost them a fortune in programming to get it to market and now have to recoop some money. You think 20 dollars is over the top? ATI started charging money for drivers for older AIW cards if I remember correctly. Why? don't know.

I'll ask again stnicralisk, why are you bitching here when you should be writing nvidia right this moment and complain. Have you tried? Do you even have a 6800? WTF. I don't get you people. If you have a bitch, take it to the right place. sheesh......

How typical of you Keys. You are the world's biggest nVidia fan (a horrible crime) next to Capt. nVidia Rollo. How dare you denounce our righteous fury?
You must work for nVidia!
Allow me to post 30 links/quotes I have wasted my spare time sifting through which unequivocally PROVE you are a nVidia fan. (a horrible crime) I bet when you sleep at night you dream of nVidia, because you are such a huge nVidia fan! (a horrible crime)
Why are you even here sticking up for them in this public forum where supposedly all opinions are welcome? It is because you are a nVidia fan! (a horrible thing)
We only want what we paid for, our interpretation of what's posted on Nvidia's website, which normally we wouldn't read and so as not to be confused with nVidia fans. (a horrible thing)
If I post enough times, the same thing over and over, will you stop being a nvidia fan? (a horrible thing)
Don't get me wrong: I know this horrible thrashing I am giving you has changed your life into a awful pantomime of my own, but I cannot still my righteous blabbering because you are a nVidia fan. (a horrible thing)
Are you totally degraded by my horrible thrashings yet Keys? Have any less money/friends/women/family/success/possessions? I thought so- but this is the price you HAVE to pay for being a nVidia fan. (a horrible thing) Stop posting altogether Keys or I will thrash you even MORE!

Actually, ATI only charged for the update to their DVD player. They *have* to pay a licensing fee to the DVD Consortium to distribute a software player, so they either had to eat the fee or have folks who wanted to update the DVD player pay $10. The old player worked just fine (though it wasn't as nicely integrated with the new software), and you could get all the new software *except* the DVD player for free. So, no, basically, ATI did not start "charging money for drivers".

NVIDIA has been charging for their DVD codecs for a long time; this is not new. Other media players *should* be able to use their hardware acceleration (at least to some extent) once they are approriately patched. It would be *nice* if they gave the player and codecs away with their $300+ cards, but then again, it would be nice if the cards worked as originally advertised as well.

Actually, isn't a chunk of the $20 you pay the nVidia DVD decoder going to Phillips to cover the costs of licensing their DVD playback patents? ASFAIK, these DVD patents force anyone who puts out commerical DVD software to charge for it in some form (which is why Windows MCE doesn't come with any preloaded codecs).

You'd figure that they'd have been able to offer an upgrade for previous NVDVD owners without running afoul of Phillips, though.

Also, what happened to the hardware-assisted DivX and WMV encoding? Did that fall by the wayside to get PureVideo out by the end of the year?

Well, Ive been using the NeroUltra suite with the Step into liquid WMHD video and i get smooth (ie 0 skipped frames on play back on my 6800GT). Cpu utilization is at 90 though. With MP10 I'll get over 200 droped frames, so that says something about about WMP10...

OK, how do I use the features that work with my 6800GT? I'm not gonna pay of course. Any tips?

Also the DVD playback quality is worse than that of my sold 9800pro.

While both of you are right, many ppl are overreacting and making a big issue out of this, the fact that Nvidia make you pay for the codecs is unecceptable IMO. I mean there is still code of ethics right?

Jesus, if you all feel shafted, go sell/return your cards and get a ATi, then everyone here that feels shafted won't have to worry about Decoders and VP's.

Nvidia may HAVE to charge us because perhaps Nvidia themselves are being charged by the codec manufacturer. I has been know to happen. Otherwise, I truly do not think Nvidia would charge you.

I thought the 6800 PCIe uses DDR? The 6800 GTO uses GDDR3, which would seem to indicate it's a bumped down 6800 GT, which would then make the 6800 GTO a NV45. Can someone explain this further?

Beware Nvidias DVD Decoder is royally fucked.
After installing the trial the NVDVD application will not even start.
The WMP will not play DVDs anymore and the Nvidia DVD decoder app which apparently has no mouse support( have fun using arrow keys to scroll through the menus)ROFL, will not play any DVDs either. Now only power DVD works on my system. Im going to have to reinstall Power DVD on it to be able to play DVDS at all now.

Isn't there even the slightest chance that it is your system that's borked and not the DVD codec?
I mean, there is that chance right? Or did you start from scratch with a fresh system? No idea.

nope. I installed the dvd decoder and dvds dont play in their player or in WMP now. Power DVD still works.
SO I uninstalled all DVD decoders, rebooted, reinstalled the Nvidia DVD decoder rebooted.
DVDs do not play.
Uninstall the POS. Reinstall Power DVD . Dvds play. The Nvidia DVD decoder TRIAL at least is scrwed and does not play dvds. I will assume the full version is equally screwed since its the same version only a different code entered at install.

I'm kind of confused....this magical vaporware video processor was supposed to accelerate encoding too, was it not? I don't remember seeing anything about that aspect of it lately though....

I have an AGP 6800GT right now, so I obviously have one of the "crippled" ones (never mind that I'd need to pay $20 or whatever it is to have it working even partially). However, I'm planning an nForce4/Athlon 64 upgrade sometime in the semi-near future, so I'd need to sell my current card and get another one. I'd really rather not downgrade to a PCI-E 6800 (not GT/Ultra), but that appears to be the only current solution if I want the PVP... I suppose I could always do 2x 6800's in SLI, but that's getting way too expensive. I already paid more than I ever thought I would for a video card when I got my 6800GT for $340, so who knows....

I own the full one and it works fine. It plays DVDs anyway. I have used it via instntmedia.exe or whatever it is called and via WMP10.
