Why is NUMBER abbreviated as "No."?

Can anyone explain this to me? Last time I checked, there's no "o" in "number".

Because if it was "Nu" we'd have people pronouncing it "noo" and that just leads to problems as shown below:

BEDEMIR: Noo! Noo!
ARTHUR: No, no, no, no -- it's not that, it's 'nee'.
BEDEMIR: Noo!
ARTHUR: No, no -- 'nee'. You're not doing it properly.
BEDEMIR: Noo! Nee!
ARTHUR: That's it, that's it, you've got it.

cuz number is like nombre or something in Latin so they abbreviated the Latin version.
