why doesn't India, home of teh kamasutra, show ANY nudity on TV? why?

Because they are still stuck in the Age of the Musical.

TTYTT, I would rather slit my throat than watch 12 hours of Indian media.

It's just yet another archaic system (among hundreds) that flat out isn't applicable (or works WRONG) to our life in 2012. It won't go away until people stop trying to cling to bullshit "tradition" and try to actually progress.

yep

Go read up on what happens if a movie gets rated as NC-17.
Few ever do...though usually it's for gratuitous reasons beyond simple "nudity", there's even R rated movies that have full frontal nudity...yet it's still nothing more than a rating and far from "regulated"

Rating IS a form of regulation.

Hmm...I think I might get it now...you mean by "regulating" what ages are allowed to see it? Doesn't stop anyone from making the movie, wouldn't stop anyone (over 17) from seeing the movie either...still sounds like a childs argument since any adult can see anything they want, and even movies with some seriously gratuitous nudity garner nothing more than an R rating, from what I've seen anything to get the dreaded NC-17 has some serious graphic sexual scenes beyond simple nudity no matter how far it goes...so is the question more about why is sex (not nudity but sex) frowned upon in movies?

Outhouse, if you get out and travel more you'll be surprised to realize how prudish USA culture is contrasted to other places...it's our puritanical heritage...and yes, it seems to me to be the norm in
greece france australia new zealand germany belgium norway denmark brazil argentina plenty more

even in open publications to the wide masses in the USA like this: (Kate's nude here, that's paint) [this is NOT BABE THREAD, fair use illustrate a point]

I was stationed in Germany for 4 years and traveled to nearly every european country. we had no kids and i worked a 6 days on 3 days off rotation and on my 3 days off my wife and I were in our car going someplace new. so ya i have been around, no nudity is not the norm, its accepted yes but it is not the norm. not all beaches are nude and not all beaches are topless. I am fully aware how prudish the US is.

I'm going to stop you right there. It DOES stop people from making the movie. As a general rule, movies cost a lot of money; millions of dollars is pretty much the bare minimum for any studio release. That's not money that most people can raise on their own, which is why they go through studios to begin with. The major studios have made it impossible to procure funding to produce a film if it is going to be branded with the NC-17 rating since most theaters won't show it and it won't make any money. The only option for filmmakers who want to produce an NC-17 film is an independent studio, but those don't have the deep pockets of the major studios and they often can't devote resources to guaranteed money sinks (the decision by every major theater chain to refuse to play NC-17 films guarantees they won't make money). So anyone looking to make a movie that's a guaranteed NC-17 will have to find someone willing to fund it privately and that's a very tall order.

So, yes, the rating stops people from making films.

The Hammer - Rated R for "brief language".

The Hunger Games - Rated PG-13 for "intense violent thematic material and disturbing images - all involving teens"

How many people were murdered in each of those movies?

MotionMan

I read a good one the other day, Battleship - Rated 12A (PG-13 for you) - yada yada, implied strong language... and was like wtf?

Ringtail they have a babe thread for that reason if you want to post it there but they are not allowed here as you know and saying it's not a babe thread image is not a defense.

And bikini shots are still NSFW for the gainfully employed.

That`s just a US thing,puritans i guess..

A US thing? US laws are less restrictive then most of the world except for a few European countries.

Name some good skin flicks from the largest countries in the world China, India, or Indonesia? How about the middle east countries? Africa?

So there's restrictions by some religions, then Victorian prudery was spread all over the world by the UK, modern feminism, and of course big government loves controlling people.

So I don't really think prudery is just a US thing. Although making 18 a common age of consent, might be the fault of the US.

Of course I`m not comparing apple to oranges,I meant within the western club..

Because this country wants the rest of the world to think that it is wholesome and such. When I was in Australia, they showed breasts, penises, and vaginas on national television (medical science show). They also let shows throw the f-bombs and other words. However, violent scenes in movies were cut out.

The opposite happens in America. Even on medical shows, they will censor out genitalia, even if it would benefit the viewer to see it uncensored. Curse words are bleeped out except on cable television. However, violent scenes are not cut out.

Australia porn has banned cartoon parodies, and small breasts. They also have internet censorship.
