Desparatly screaming for help in a horrible situation.
They need help and have no conduit to talk, so they revert to whatever means they have to focus attention.

Bush cut off thier food source and fuel sorce, just because he could.

Why do I think it would be American hating, Because we are the great Satan. What could be done to change that? We could convert to Muslim and start stoning people for Crimes against God.

We already have an Asian American hating state NK you might as well include SK too if you go popular sentiment.

I think that the *dislike* comes not from religion - that can be overcome - but from actions. In particular towards the support of Isreal.

On the subject of NK - I don't understand why your opinion

Most Israelis aren?t running around in the streets telling us to go home. Plus we don?t have 35,000 troops in Israel protecting their border. Plus I'd rather see Israel thrive than have another American hating Militant Islamic state.

can be reconciles with

They are hoping that the current administration will do like the last and give in to them. IMO we should just pull out of Korea and let the Countries around them take care of the situation. Let South Korea take care of the problem they want us out anyway I say f*ck em

Sorry - maybe I'm missing something 😕

The South Korean people want us out of their country, which means they don?t want our assistance. The Israelis don?t seem to mind our benevolence. 🙂

How many want the US out? Is it a majority? (I have no idea about this issue).

We claim that Saddam is a bad guy, and he's got nukes and chems and all this other good stuff.
So to show us up, they MAKE nukes and chems and Kim Jong Il comes out and says "Hey! Look at me! I'm a bad guy!"

And that way we look like total stooges when we attack Saddam and not Kim.

Saddam has been doing the same thing for over 12 years....Kim has been for the last few months. That is why we are approaching them differently.

Not because he could but because they broke the agreement they had with us in the first place. Food and Oil was cut after the fact. http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/10/16/us.nkorea/

A few of the soldiers misabuse their position over there. I know of one rape of a minor by a group of military soldiers on the top of my head.

The SK that are being vocal are mainly born after the Korean conflict. They have grown up in prosperity had have no recollection of what NK and the Chinese did in the 50s. They also see how our US troops behave (via the media) to the locals. From their point of view, what does the US have to offer. To them, NK is an itch that needs to be scratched every now and then. NK propiganda machine has worked wonders on blaming the US for the tension.

Israel has had continual conflict and the evidence is seen daily. They have realized that they stand alone amonst and among enemies and any help is welcome.

I've been calling for a withdrawal of troops from SK for awhile now (bring our men and women in uniform back home where they belong, I say). SK is a very successful nation right now, so let them handle their own security. We are not an occupying force...if they don't want us there we should leave. Unfortunately widespread anti-American sentiment among the Korean public alone isn't enough...we need the SK government to ask us to leave. More internal pressure will be needed before that happens.

They very well might be trying to start a war. Some of their actions go past simple rhetoric. When you "lock on" your radar onto a plane, that is pretty much an act of war right there......:disgust:

If the US really wanted to help them it would force them to start talking seriously with the palestinians again - most likely by demanding action for military aid (weapons sales, etc.) Progress was being made up until the realatively recent violence. Unfortunately both sides then became entrenched when the Isrealis elected a war criminal for a leader, and hamas took over the palestinian agenda by frequently deploying suicide bombers.

IMHO this will only work out by concession and dialogue - there is no other alternative.

I really don't think they want a war - they want to be heard, they want their way and they want to live in a state of perpetual war (good for the government) - but they don't ACTUALLY want a war. How can people think this?

There is a US interest problem at the heart of this. If the US withdrew and the worst happened - a military clash between the N and the S it could well flare up into a much larger conflict. With China so near (I guess it would act decisively if it thought nukes were going to be used by anyone around there) its just too big a deal to not keep under control/surveillance.

I'm glad this thread was started. I was reading about N Korea in a different thread and the exact same thought occurred to me that I don't understand what N Korea is trying to accomplish. Some of the posts in this thread have helped me understand their issues, but the bottom line to me still seems to be they are crazy, so there actions aren't rational.

Another war with North Korea would kill millions of people

my solution is to give Japan and South Korea medium range nukes (the ones that would just varely make it to Bejing) and wait for China to persude its ally (NK) to change its mind about having a nuke program

Problem is that the first thing NK will strike is Seoul with tens of thousands of artillery pieces.

A conflict in the Korean peninsula will only lead to devastation of unbelievable scale.

With so many corporate giants based in Seoul, the world including America will feel the economic impact directly as well.

Which was a conflict, btw, that would not have happened if it weren't for the Americans and the Soviets dividing up Korea. And there were some very questionable stuff going on just before the conflict.

From what I hear, many South Koreans are ticked because the Americans are trying to move their military base to the south, and they take this as a sign of them preparing to launch an attack on North Korea.

What they think is that without the American military presence in South Korea, a military conflict is less likely. And I agree with that.

nor do I.
looking at it logically, I dont believe the US would strike 1st.
I dont see what North Korea would gain by attacking anyone in the region or be foolish enough to launch one of their firecrackers our way.

That's what I think too, but I don't want to make any predictions since they are people who live in a system of thought very alien from ours.

I'm afraid that the Bush administration WILL strike first, though. I heard of some not-so-pleasant stories from some scholars of Korean Studies recently.

Ok, let's clear up a few things. The only reason that South Korea is free is because the U.S. persuaded the Soviets to stop their drive to the south midway. Ergo, the north is Stalinist, and the south is democratic. Would it be better if the entire peninsula were under Kim Chong-il? There certainly wouldn't be a Samsung or a Hyundai.

What you hear is wrong about the US basing. It's the SOUTH KOREANS who want the US to move out of Yongsan Barracks because it's right in the middle of Seoul and is taking up a great deal of prime real estate. It's actually quite a big installation -- I was surprised when I went there last October. I just read recently that the US has agreed to move out of Seoul to another as-yet-unnamed facility farther south. I certainly hope the South Koreans are picking up the tab.

Certainly the US presence is a deterrence to North Korean aggression. However, the little young bucks of South Korean's colleges can't have it both ways. They can't demonstrate against our presence, assault our troops, damage our bases, refuse training ranges, decry flight operations, and call for our departure while still asserting that they want us to stay for the time being because they are scared of Uncle Chonger. If they call for us to leave, I say f*** them -- let's go. It's already one of the least desired assignments (speaking from the Air Force perspective, though I doubt the Army feels any differently), and there would be many happy people if it disappeared. Japan is great -- we'll stay here.
