Why is Napster so slow for me?

Shared T1 at a school, but I get less than 1k/s. I'm on port 6699; should I change ports? Would that help. On CuteMX, I've gotten .10MB/s transfers, so what the heck is going on? Is my school doing something? I wouldn't think so, because the IT dept. is pretty clueless.

Some schools ban access to napster, this may be your problem. Try one of the other file sharing networks or search engines, such as audiogalaxy or gnutella.

That is not the problem - If access to Napster was banned for him, he would not be able to log on at all, and he says he is simply experiencing very low transfer rates.

The network at school (where I am at the moment) is very slow, and we are on a satellite connection I believe, as 600ms is the absolute best ping I have ever seen on it (except for 30ms, when we had cable).

Napster was slower than regular downloads here too.. I bet it just has to do with the way the network is set up there. They can be restraining certain ports/things to lower amounts of bandwidth/speed.

If you can use Download Manager, you will get much higher speed, but that doesn't work with Napster. I would suggest just to try different servers... When you list the search, make sure to filter it out to at least T1 and better.

actually my school didn't ban the usage of port 6699, they just slowed it down somehow.

My napster goes kind of slow too, but not that slow... 1kb/s is modem speeds.

try downloading from other people then i guess

www.napigator.com

sounds like you've just found a slow connection, napigator will find you a faster one...I think, I haven't tried it yet, but the info at the page looks promising.

your school admins are doing something called throttling. they probabbly picked out a few of the napster ports and are monitoring them, and whenever people start making connections over those port they throttle down the bandwidth being allocated to that connection.

btw this is badly worded but hopefully you can get the idea trying to be presented
