Why is my XP1700 always relatively hot? -- ~53C CONSTANT

i ran through a ton of different setups with it..and its always between 51 to 55C idle...

1st: Generic Midtower, ECS mobo, approved Coolermaster 60mm HSF, stock thermal pads: ~51C
2nd: Same setup with Antec grease instead of thermal pads: ~52C
3rd: Same setup with SVC GC68 80mm HSF: ~52C (same)
4th: Same setup + Artic Silver 3: same temp
5th: Same plus Panaflo exhaust: same temp
6th: Same plus 60mm Intake (in addition to panaflo exhaust): same temp
7th: NEW MOBO, Evercase Midtower, SVC GC68 fan on Artic Silver 3, stock 60mm side-fan blowing on top of HSF: ~54C

i know that the readings are correct, as the temp does fluctuate, and i already switched mobos... so you can rule out a faulty die-sensor or whatever..

I think I lapped or put the paste on correctly every single time --- acetone clean cpu + heatsink surface, spread paste over heatsink with plastic bag, wipe off excess, apply very thin, flat, and even layer on CPU, apply HSF evenly , etc...

i know that my methods arent at fault here... so why is this thing running sooo hot when everyone else is getting 40C idle?

what motherboard are you using? Are you tracking differences in system temp when you change system stuff?

Across a motherboard model, teh temps are usually fairly consistent... its between different motherboard models that the temps vary quite a bit. That's why the particular motherboard is important to determine whether or not you're running too hot.

the first was ECS K7S5A

now im on Epox 8KHA+

thats wiht a new CASE also... and a fan blowing right on top of HSF

im thinking about adding an intake+exhaust...but that would probably prove useless like the last 7 different setups as listed

I know this is a dumb question for a senior member but are you sure you have the fan over the HS oriented the proper way? If you have the fan blowing out and the fan over it blowing in then you defeat the purpose of both fans. Your post sounds like you know what you are doing. Not to wanting to slam the SVC GC68 (as some swear by them) but why don't you try one of the larger HSF like the Thermalright AX7? I have two of them coming to use on both my systems because everyone on these forums recomends either the AX7 or the Alpha PAL 8045. What are your case temps running, high as well?

waht kind of system temps? From what i've seen, the 8kha+ series of boards generally reads in teh 12-20C over system temp range .... if you're beyond that, the heatsink could be sitting on the cpu improperly.

Mike

the side fan is sitting exactly AS-IS from the factory

it is pulling air from outside in..and feeding to the SVC GS68 that , ofcourse, blows air over the heatsink...

On the ECS Mobo, My case temp were around 36-38... with the supposedly better Evercase case and Epox mobo, "mainboard"(case?) reads 46C with very little fluctuations

well, there's your problem... 46c system temps with a 54c CPU temp is great. Your case temp, though, is ridiculously high.

What kind of room temps do you have where you are at? It is impossible to ask for 40C idle temps when your system temps are over that number.

Mike

the room temp is 75 i think

the case is sitting under a table but there is a little clearance all around... its not like i stuffed it in a corner

Definitely sounds like your case temps are too hot.

54'C (CPU) - 46'C (case) = 8 degree internal difference.
But 46'C (case) - 23.9'C (room) = much too big of a difference

Try running your case without side panel or better yet, to make sure that your CPU heatsink/fan is not the problem, get a "standard" box room fan and blow directly on the open side and see if your temps drop appropriately.

Might want to think of installing a permanent blow hole on side of case.

case open + house turned down a few degrees = 37 case, 46/47 CPU idle

well, i guess ill just leave it like this 🙂
