why is my Windows directory name Windows.000?

Fresh install of Win98SE and the directory where all the system files are is named Windows.000. There is a Windows directory, but hardly anything is in it. I had a problem when installing and the system rebooted when it shouldn't have. I deleted the Windows directory, but i can't rename the Windows.000 directory. Anybody know whats up with this?

I've seen it before...for some reason or another it didn't want to install to \Windows, \Windows.000 is the 2nd choice. I'm not sure exactly what causes it to "not want to install to \Windows" though..

Nothing for it but a clean install.

That's your problem. You should have formatted again at that point.

Usually happens when ".\Windows" already exists.

when you reinstall and you dont remove \windows directory, it will install to \windows.000 usually. you have to tell it to install to \windows manually.

This was a fresh format. And i had already selected the directory to be C:\Windows. When the system rebooted it continued installing like nothing had happen....there was no way to manually select a directory because i had already done that before the reboot.

Do you think if i will have any problems due to this Windows.000 directory?

weird...clean format. i dont think you should have any problems. as long as the OS knows its called windows.000 it should be fine.

Windows must no since its pulling all the .dlls and drivers there. I just hope it doesn't forget.

I wonder what would happen if you did a clean install to C:\Crasher or the like??

When the system rebooted did you start the install over? If so, Windows 98 will recognize a windows directory already exists, and try to install to C:\Windows.000. You can force it to install to C:\Windows. You must have overlooked it when you did the install. You will probably have to reinstall Windows if you want it to be in the C:\Windows directory.

when the system rebooted the installation process started where it had left off, which was after the directory selection.
