I just went out to buy the sims for PS2 today, I sit down to play it. Put the disc in and it sounds like it starts to spin up and starts making like a scratching noise or something. I eject the disc and look it over, it looks fine. I clean the lens with a DVD lens cleaner, try another PS2 game NCAA Football, it works fine. I put the sims back in and it still makes the noise, sometimes it is recognized, sometimes its not, but I cannot get it to actually play the game. The CD looks exactly like every other one I have, no physical defects i can see. I plan to return it to gamestop tomorrow, and see what they say, but I was wondering if there was a defect i did not know about, like the fact that NCAA football tends to freeze an the older PS2's like mine. Thanks

Personally, don't play the Sim, get a refund. If you really wanna play it that badly, go to the store and get the PC version instead. It doesn't just quite as much.

What???

I have the deluxe version for the PC, but I got kinda bored with it, I wanted to try the level based play of the PS2 version.

I am getting ready to go to gamestop, any other things I need to know, or possible causes for this problem?

might be some kind of copy protection, they can sometimes cause problems with older ps2's

Yeah, but would copy protection make it make a weird noise. I mean i tlamost sounds like the disc is to big and is scratching the sides of the bay as it trys to spin, I compared it to another disc and they appear to be the exact same.

The noise might be the lens moving back and forth on its track. Hmm, how old is your PS2? I mean, mine is new but I notice that its noticeably louder, laser transport, then my old PSX.

mine has a similar problem with nba street... sux...
Have you found a remedy?

I just exchanged for another one at gamestop and it is doing the same thing. As said it could be the lens moving or the CD spinning, but it won't play and all my other games play fine. I am pretty sure I got an original model PS2 since I also have occasional problems with NCAA football 2003 freezing, which i believe was limited to only the older models. The guy at gamestop said it could be because it is one of the blue backed games. All of my other games are clear or whatever except 1, Virtua Fighter 4 is also blue, but it plays fine. But now I have come across 2 problems with my system, the football freezing and not being able to play the sims. Can I get sony to do anything about this? MY system is no longer under warranty, but man it seems like they screwed up somewhere.

Well it looks like I will be selling or trading in my PS2 in order to get a new one, or maybe a used one from gametsop as long as it is the newer model. How much are they going for right now, used ones I mean, I know gamesto sells them for 150.00, wondering if i should spend the extra 50.00 and just get a new one.

Well I thought it was fun for the puter, even thought i couldn't get very far since there were only 5 friends in my game, and I needed 6 to advance job levels. I thought the PS2 version would be fun since it is challenge based.

Nevermind, I think I have found my problem. I dismantled my PS2, I needed to clean it anyway. I took the cover off the DVD drive. The cover basically consists of 2 pieces. The cover itself(black) and then a piece centered in the middle of where the CD would be(white). I am not exactly sure what the use of this piece is, but something i did notice was that it had some blue paint or whatever on it. I bet you can guess what color the top of the Sims game is by now, but if you can't I will tell you its blue. Low and behold there is also some missing paint on the disc in the right spot. So I have done some reading and found out that the blue backed discs are possiblly lighter then the others. So my conclusion is that the disc while being spinned was light enough that it was lifting up and contacting the white peice in the top of the DVD drive cover. Now the question is, how do i fix this?
