why is my network file transfer speeds slow?

hey,

i have a peer to peer network setup...both computers have a D-Link DE-528 NIC (10Mb only pci card) and i'm using a crossover cable...when i try to transfer files they take a really long time...5MB takes like 10 min...can you help me? post any questions if you need more info...

What kind of hardware are you using? That seems a bit slow. It could be a duplex issue. Try manually setting both cards to be either 10Mbit Full or 10Mbit Half Duplex.

check to see if the drivers installed are the latest support full and half duplex.

Try netstat -e and look for errors, here is a sample output.

If you have errors it could be a duplex issue or a bad cable. Did someone make this cable or is a factory xover?

factory crossover...i used a coax cable before and i had the same problem, i had hoped switching to a crossover would fix it...

both cards are at half-duplex...default setting...

My WAG is that one the cards is either bad, or having interupt/dma problems on the PCI bus. Try moving the cards in the slots. Especially avoid slots that share IRQ's with other slots, like AGP and first PCI is pretty common .

MrChicken: both cards were in the first PCI slot, so i moved both of them...i also uninstalled the NIC's and reinstalled them in both computers...they now work at the speed they're suppose to...i don't know if reinstalling or moving them helped it, but both can't hurt, so you get credit also...THANKS!
