Why is my memory going?

Seriously, when I was a kid, I remembered my days as if my life depended on it. I thought it was strange whenever anyone took note on anything since I had a transcript of just about everything that was ever said.

Fast forward 15 years and now I'm struggling with remembering names of places or even labels for things. I'm starting to feel it come across in conversations. It feels a bit bizarre pausing on some basic details. It also makes me a horrible story teller.

What is happening to me? How does ATOT deal with this?

That is called being human, some peoplewhen young have an Eidetic memory memory. It almost always goes away by adulthood.

You're getting old. When you're a kid, you do fuck all throughout the day, so everything is memorable. Also, kids are engineered to remember when young. When old, you get overwhelmed with stuff you have to remember, and your capability is diminished. Also, weed...

You have Alzheimer's and dementia.

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases.

Alzheimer's is not a normal part of aging, although the greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer's are 65 and older.

long term stress and depression can cause what your describing. After working nights for about 5 years I went trough a fun that was similar. I started making stupid mistakes and was basically burned out.

Needed a recharge and a new mountain to climb so I changed jobs.

How old are you? 90?

Old age and memory loss is a myth. The reason we lose our memory is because we don't exercise it. Play memory games. Try to learn a new language. Take a course(s) on Coursera.

I just found out this site called Memrise.

This.

As a kid I recall not knowing shit about anything that didn't interest me. People's names, birthdates, places of origin, familial relationships all meant fuck all to me because I was a little caveman who didn't give a damn about anything but himself. Add in the fact that I had no bills, no work related knowledge, no anything that was it was particularly vital to have in my brain, and I ended up with a lot of spare hard drive space to devote to the kiddie shit I was interested in. Naturally I knew a ton about whatever idiotic thing I was focused on though.

Now I'm an adult with a myriad of responsibilities and an awareness of social etiquette that compels me make an effort to shove all that shit that never used to matter to me into my head. It dilutes all of it and weakens my ability to recall any one thing on command.

I have had this issue for a few years. It had gotten so bad last year that I went to a doctor and then a neurologist. Eventually, after running scans and tests, I was told that I'm just getting older (and possibly stressed and tired). I've had my memory come back and go a few times since then. Don't know....just falling apart I guess! :(

As you age you need to work on your memory more so that it doesn't atrophy. Take some ginkgo, get a good nights sleep and... and... SHIT! What was this thread about?

Thanks, checking it out now.

Too much weed when you were younger and your brain was developing.

Not really... I can probably count the number of times I've done that with two hands.

What's funny was that probably two years ago all I wanted to do was forget everything due to a bad time... now the irony is I stopped remembering current events and ideas.

this happened to me when i had brain surgery. by the age of 25, i got to a point where i often dont remember things i did 10 minutes ago, let alone days/weeks/months ago.

and i cant remember anything beyond the first letter of many peoples' names

it sucks, but after i realized that the memory isnt coming back, i just try to live for today

i hope when i am 50 i can still remember enough to enjoy life

I find I remember only the things that are important to me. There is nothing in this world that you "should" remember, including people's birthdays and anniversaries. If they aren't important to you, then you don't need to remember them.
