I just got a new laptop that supports gigabit ethernet. Since my desktop also supports gigabit, I thought I'd add a new switch so I can transfer my music files. I bought a Linksys SD2005 gigabit switch. So my network is now set up as follows:
The cable modem is hooked up to a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Connected to the router are a printer and a VOIP device. There's also a CAT 6 cable from the router to the new gigabit switch. Both the computer and laptop are connected via CAT 6 cable.
I have the default workgroup setup on the desktop computer and I turn sharing on for the music folder. From the laptop, I can see the shared music folder and can drag music files to the laptop. However, when I drag the music files to the laptop, I usually get transfer speeds of only about 3 to 4 MB/sec (though I did get 7 MB/sec once). If I were taking full advantage of the gigabit speed, I should be getting much faster transfer speeds.
What am I doing wrong?
