Kind of hard to troubleshoot. It could be your video or sound card drivers. Have you tried reinstalling the game?

What video card ?
What drivers ?
What Motherboard ? If Via- do you have the latest 4 in 1 drivers ?
It is difficult for people to diagnose a problem without more specific details that what you posted.

I can say this. Upping to win2k is not going to solve you prob. It may even make it worse

I havent played in a few weeks, but I was going at it pretty heavily from september-january. I usually got a lockup once every couple days. What I noticed is that it would lock up only if I had not rebooted my system for a day or two. If my computer had been running for 1-2 days straight, it would often lockup when I clicked on the D2 icon...then I would reboot & all was well. Actually, D2 is the ONLY thing that ever freezes up my machine, so I would imagine there is some sort of conflict originating in the game.

My D2 Setup:
P3 600/876
P3V4X
2x128MB Mushkin Rev.2
Geforce 256
Toshiba DVD, HP 9310 CDRW
Windows ME

lol talk about some hardcore addiction...
are you running it in directdraw mode? page exception fault error is an issue addressed multiple times at the bnet forums. try running it in d3d or glide, whichever thats available to you. actually, i had that happened to me so many times i took a brief break from playing diablo2 :( just gon hafta wait for another patch...
