Why is my brothers DVD burner only burning at 1x?

Comp is a AMD Xp 2200+ 512 ram XP Pro all updates and such
I have it because im transfering all his data to his new laptop, im trying to burn his MP3s to DVDs because its actually faster then transfering them over my network, or it should be


I have the same burner, very similar comp, i burn at 8x

im useing Roxio 6, came with the burner,
ive checked the modes all HDDs are in DMA mode as well as the drives
all drivers are up to date and such, i can select 4x or 8x yet it will only burn at 1x,

anyone have any idea WHY it would be doing this? i have not tried nero yet but i might

the same media burns at 8x for me, its the same burner and same version of the burner so i didnt think that would be the issue

try testing his unit in ur pc if it does work in yours then check his mobo drivers and BIOS configuration, make sure hes not charing the ide channel with some crappy hd ata 33 bc that would slow ur channel as well

i can tell you for a fact that its not shareing a channel with a ata 33 HDD, its hooked in with a CD rom drive
it might be the slave tho, would that do it?

yea both have teh same firmware
