Why is my athlon locked

I have an Athlon Xp 2400 on ASUS A7N8X rev 1.03. I tired to overclcok it but i think that it'
s locked.
In BIOs in the multiplier menu I have such figures ( i type them in order like they appearin the Bios ):
13.0x
13.5x
14.0x
7.0x/15.0x
8.0x/16.0x
8.5x/16.5x
9.0x/17.0x
9.5x
10x
10.5x
11x
11.5x
12x
12.5x

When I enter the BIos ( on default setting) the multiplier is set to 12.5x( the bottom position in the multiplier window) and FSB to 133 Mhz.
When I change the multiplier to:
13.0x after reboot it shows AMD Athlon XP 667Mhz.
14.0x after reboot it shows AMD Athlon XP 800Mhz.
9.0x/17.0x after reboot it shows AMD Athlon XP 1200 Mhz.
12.x after reboot it shows AMD Athlon XP 1900 (without Mhz)

If my cpu works at 12.5 x 133=1662,5 Mhz that means it isnt working at the right speed (as a Xp+ 2400)
What funny is that in windows and in all benchmarks it shows that my cpu is working at 2.0 or 2.03 GHz!
What the f*** is wrong why can i overclock it? Am I missing something here??

The A7N8X board will not let you use multipliers over 12.5x with the XP2400. When using a higher multiplier than 12.5x, the board is simply using the lower multipliers (ie, 13.0x is using 5.0x).

You can OC it by increasing the FSB though. If your RAM is good enough, try increasing the FSB to 166 and go from there.

Otherwise, you'll need a board like the NF7-S that will allow you to use the multipliers higher than 12.5x.

But would my motherboard let me use higer multipliers then 12.5x if i had a different cpu ( faster then XP 2400)??

If the stock multiplier of the CPU is 13x or higher, you will get access to the higher multipliers but not to the lower ones. Your best bet is to hard wire the multiplier on the CPU by connecting some pins on the CPU.

Why not just do what you should do, buy yourself some PC3200 (200mhz, DDR 400) ram now, so you can overclock that mobile Athlon (yes, when discussing your cpu on a forum, you should call it a mobile Athlon) up to 2.3-2.5ghz?:roll:

Yeah sure, but I don't got a mobile athlon (unfortunately) I have just an Athlon Xp as I wrote....

I changed the FSB to 166 but automatically the multiplier changed to 7.0x/15.0x.
I just guess my ram (samsung pc 2100) and heatsink are not good enough! ( so it's gonna change soon...)

Oh! 1 more thing if my Athlon Xp 2400+ supposed to work at 2.00 Ghz speed how come its multipier is set to only 12.5??!! (12.5x133=1662,5 Mhz!!!)???

Because either your motherboard is screwed, your cpu is screwed, or you got screwed (if you bought the cpu used, that is). I would definitely guess that it's your motherboard, since in one of your last posts, you said that when you changed the multiplier, the fsb changed automatically. THAT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN, WITH ANY MOTHERBOARD! If it's new, RMA it. If it isn't, buy yourself an Abit NF7-S to replace it with.

well.
1) the cpu was bought in the shop it wasn't second handed..
2) the multiplier changed automaticaly becuase it was set to "Auto" so once i increased the fsb from 133 to 166 the motherboard changed the multiplier so my cpu doesn't overheat..that's my guess though. :/
