why is microsoft fighting the apple ad war alone?

i don't get it. PC = personal computer. is a Mac not a "personal computer"?
stupid nomenclature i guess. who still calls their Wintel computers a PC these days anyway?

why is MS taking the burden of defending the pc alone? a computer is hardware + software. why aren't the big computer sellers like dell and HP giving them some backup?

and the apple ads are saying that Mac's are superior to "PC's" but seeing that they run basically the same hardware these days, what exactly are they saying?
shouldn't they just come out and say OSX vs. windows instead?

Re: PC - as I explained in the thread about the Patrick Warburton ad, since the IBM PC "PC" has been used mostly to refer to IBM PCs, IBM-compatible PCs, and now Windows PCs.

Re: why MS is the only company countering Apple's ads - I think companies like Dell and HP are more concerned with companies they compete against directly, like HP and Dell.

Yes, they're generally referring to OS X vs Windows. But their target audience is people whose computer buying decisions could be influenced by a 30 second TV ad, talking about operating systems is a bit technical. Mac vs PC gets the point across just as clearly and more concisely. Also, you generally don't want to mention a competitor by name.

I'm amazed at how emotional people get about these ads, and I just can't understand it. They point out ever logical flaw, attack the Apple guy's wardrobe, and pick apart every line.

I mean, really, who cares? The most clever ad in the world is not going to put thousands of dollars in someone's pocket to go buy a premium product. I'm confident that when I buy my next computer I'll have enough information to make an informed decision without watching a single one of those ads. I'm also pretty confident that if someone asks me for a computer recommendation, I can be of much more help than those ads.

That about sums it up.

i don't know what to think of these ads.
for one, they won't convince me to ever buy an overpriced apple personal computer.

on one hand i think they're pretty cute, although they've been using the same angle for the past few years now so it's getting kinda played.

on the other hand, i also feel it's childish to put down a competitor to boost their own image.

and justin long just annoys the shit outta me.

lol, that is actually quite funny

The Lexus ads every Christmas piss me off a lot more than the Mac vs. PC ones. Seriously, a $40k+ car as a Christmas present?

People need practical advice. Average joes need to know what to get. Mac or PC is avery high-level question. People ask me "do macs get viruses?" And the short answer I tell them is no, but it's only because they don't get attacked as much since everyone is on windows. I seriously recommend macs for these people because they are less likely to get bogged down by malware as the same rate as a PC.

People are too dumb to argue about hardware or software, they just want a "computer" and need to know what "kind" to buy.

If OSX could be bought stand alone for a PC, that would be a different story.

This!

Me: Hmmm what can I get my wife that will top the pool I installed for her last Xmas...
TV: Give your wife a car for Xmas
Me: **Shits $40k**
Dealer: This money smells like your butthole, but I'll still take it
Wife: OMG I love you so much, here is your yearly BJ for Xmas!

I always wondered if they provide that giant bow you see on TV. I bet they don't 🙁

They do sell the bows, but they sell out before the holidays.

Hahahaha - so true. Those Lexus commercials do make me want to puke. I absolutely love to hate the one where the wife gives the guy the cold shoulder until he reveals that he bought her a Lexus, then she and the kids are all happy. Ugh, the consumerism is (for whatever reason) a hundred times worse in Lexus commercials (especially around Christmas) than other commercials.

If you buy cars in that price range, why is it not believable to get someone a car for Christmas? Doesn't mean that you have to plunk down $45k on the spot, but someone could be replacing a used car for a family member and decide to do it that time of year.
