Why is meter feeding illegal ?

deftron

Lifer
It's guaranteed cash for the meter, right?

I mean, if you left your spot ... someone else might not take it for awhile...
leaving the meter unused and unpaid for during that time

Don't understand why you have to move your car if you
want to park longer than initially expected.

Doesn't the city make money off parking tickets not the police.

Anyways ... they would still make money if they let you
put some more in the parking meter ...
instead of driving around looking for a new spot
(loosing parking money in the meantime)

25 cents for 1 hour of parking versus at least $30 parking ticket.

Whats the PD?

police department

They count on parking violations for revenue.

No, we don't. The city might, but we only get a portion of their budget, which is dedicated no matter how much revenue comes in from tickets.

Indeed

Depends on the city. In some cities it is not only legal, but also encouragd: they've recently installed meters somewhere in LA metropolitan area that send a message to your cellphone if they are about to expire.

Its ALL about the tickets. And probably 1/3 of the people that get $25 tickets wind up paying $50 because they paid late. Tickets help make budgets, not quarters.

And because of this, in many places its also illegal for 'good samaritans' to feed others' parking meters to help them avoid a ticket, and the good samaritan can be cited as well.

How would they know you didn't move it?

There is a little countdown on the meter.

If it's at 0 and there is a car there that car gets a ticket. 😛

Actually the parking maid walks around and puts a grease mark on your tire. If it dont move and you have her/his special color after a period of time you win!

Yea but you put more in. Maybe I'm reading the topic wrong.

They mark the back of the car tires with chalk, in my town. If they come around again and see the chalk marks still there, you get ticketed.

In some places, meter maids chalk tires. They have a long rod with a stick of chalk at the end and put a mark on them so they know if its moved.

/edit: HotChic is too quick for me. 😀

I was under the impression that you could feed your meter as long as you wanted, but you can't just walk around putting money into meters to keep the city from writing tickets.

There was a story a while ago where a guy was arrested for putting quaters into a string of meters in order to keep the city from writing tickets for the meters.

Or maybe it was just an episode of Ed. I don't remember.

Does anyone remember the episode of Jackass where one of the guys went around in a fairy costume and kept feeding the meters only to be busted by the meter maids lol.

No, it's illegal to refill the meter if it's not your vehical that's parked there.

That's doubly retarded.
