Why is me the worst os?

I just don't get it, I have been using it for a year and I am loving it with faster bootup say 30sec vs 9x 1min 30sec on average. I had nothing but problem with XP, my divx played somewhat slower. solution? format harddrive and reinstall, did that same problem. perhaps its hardware problem? Whatever it is, i been constantly pulling my hair out trying to make xp run super stable, no luck. No os is perfect as XP have crashed on me quite a few times due to 3rd party software such as bittorent which freezes up everything and nothing moves. I got tired of it and just reset my pc.

My friend who used XP for a year said it crashed more then any OS he have ever used, and he kept getting virus too, and having to format his harddrive everytime due to a virus.

Your computer is a piece of sh!t, simple as that. Any decent, modern day computer will run WindowsXP a kabillion times better than it runs Windows ME, especially when uptime factors into the equation.

XP being based on the NTFS alone makes it a much better solution than ME or 9x..

Memory management.

Having XP along to pick up all hardware alone just makes it that much easier to install without the need for driver discs.

PPPOE Without the need for extra software.

Your friend isn't very smart if he is getting virui and constantly reformatting. Get a firewall, get an AV program.

XP's stability towers ME, Try running WinME for about 10 days, doing your normal computer usage ( or mine at least - Gaming, tweaks, P95, downloading, demos, unistall reinstallions...) ME would crumble and you would eventually be forced into a restart. XP can easily go for 6-9 months if M$ got it together and didn't have a thousand updates consistenly... :|

I think M$ states its stable for 99.9% 364 days a year...

My POS computer (and I mean real POS - celereon 337, 75 mhz fsb, 196mb RAM) will run Xp better then ME, and problably alot better then your comp runs ME. If it works for you, fair enough, but I would rather run 98se or 3.11 then ME. ME sux teh big one. No doubt. NT all the way (if you use windows that is)

Shift-delete (to delete and bypass the Recycle Bin), is broken. Try it. The stupid thing prompts you twice, and gives you an error when you clear the dialog boxes.

None of the 32-bit era Windows (even the original 95) had that problem.

System restore is problematic too. Every time I needed it, it didn't work. Even if I had deliberately created a restore point, it told me there weren't any (and yes, System Restore was enabled).

If XP is extremely problematic, I would argue that it might be a case of PEBCAK.

Unfortunately, saying what you have said here is not going to move anyone; it's a firmly entrenched (and proven) idea that WinME is rubbish...the worst of the entire line of Windows OSes.

I readily agree that XP is one of the best OSes MS has ever created. But regarding ME, i didnt notice anything worse than 98SE. They're both 9x based. ME seemed to be a bit bloated but it booted up faster than 98SE and everything else was pretty much the same. What else is there to bitch about?

XP has passed my "11 year old daughter with learning disabilities test"

She's had her own computer for years, & managed to hose 98', ME, 2000...

XP is the only OS she hasn't crashed.

I used Windows Me right up until about last spring. I loved it. Yeah I got the occasional blue screen and sure it froze a couple times, but next to 98 and 98se, it was 100 times more stable. Also I never had backward compatibility issues like I do with XP. When I went to XP I could no longer use my Guillermot Muse sound card anymore nor my Kensington web cam. I guess this isn't the fault of microsoft but more the fault of the companies not supporting their products. Anything that I ran I 98 worked in Me though, probably the best thing about it. And speaking of bloated pigs, just sitting idle XP eats about 80 megs of ram. I've never seen Me eat anywhere near that much sitting idle. My other complaint about XP was that awful gui they created for it. Thank god they let you switch gui's back to classic mode or I never would have used it. I couldn't find anything once I had it set up. The first thing I did was go looking for how to turn that off. It's supposed to make it "easier" to use for the less inclined users, but for someone who knew Windows, nothing is easily accessible.
Once you fix the gui with XP and put enough ram in the pc for the thing to chew through though, I have to say I do prefer it over Me. Hardly ever crashes on me, and when it does it's not a problem with the OS but rather heat issues with my computer(my XP2400 likes to run hot, but I have to turn the fans down at night so I can sleep). So overall XP is the better operating system, but Me is not as horrible as everyone sais and it does have it's advantages over XP.

#1 is the protected systems function. It protects against altering system files, but once a virus gets in there you can't remove it because a virus scanner is unable to scan those files. So the virus stays and continues to cause problems.

That's the number one reason why ME is considered soooooo horrible of an OS?? I'm sure there's a workaround for that...

Besides, i'm sure ME's system restore function makes up for that deficiency

I've been a loyal 98se user for years. I got ME free from a Microsoft training session. The 2 times I installed it I've had nothing but errors, crashes, and general unstability using it. Same system, same hardware each time. Don't know why since it's based off 98 anyway and I have zero problems with 98.

I still like 2000 better than XP on a domain.

ME was bad and would get worse and worse as time wore on. A reinstall every 3-6 months usually fixed most of it.

XP seems to run more stable over a longer time frame (if you don't add/remove programs all the time).

actually, ME was never even supposed to come out. it just took them soo long to finish up XP Home that they quickly put together ME. that's the main reason ME sux. it was never given the testing necessary.

ME was an "oops excuse me, we are too far behind schedule but we HAVE to make some money so why don't some of you idiots just buy this POS".

ME was just a win2k wannabe. Needless to say it didn't even come close. unfortunately some still use that POS OS in a professional environment. I mean come on, teleprompters fed by PCs running ME??? No wonder it crashes at least once a day. Sorry but that OS is a pain in the backside and a liability to me - as it probably initially be "my fault" if one of those computers crashes in the middle of a news broadcast.
