Why is Max Payne so damn awesome

because the programmers are one of the few who are ABLE to code a kicka$$ game-engine which produces great visuals even on lower end hardware.

99% of all other games/game-engines are targeted at the low-end mainstream (gta:sa, anyone ?) so it runs on the majority of all hardware. Also, 99% of all game-engines are just ineffective, bloated, slow, dont support certain h/w specific features etc.

Add a good story (like in MP2) and out comes a kicka$$ game.

Its RARE that a game w/ a good story has a good engine - or if it HAS a good engine the game itself is just dumb (doom 3 etc..)

Max Payne 2 (never played the first) was a pretty awesome game up until the point where you have to save Max after he gets hit in the head in the construction site, and all of the levels after. That level was annoying, the one with the TNT barrels was annoying, and the final boss fight kind of sucked. Overall it was still good though.

Max Payne 2 is the best damned game in forever. How can you even beat the first level? The great action, the slo-mo with dual Ingrams, but on top of everything else - the voice acting and music.

"Max....Max! MAAAAAAAX!" as you blow through the final bit of opposition to rescue Vladimir Lem. A freakin' piece of art.

As has been said, amazing game engine, ran and looked amazing at max details on my mates fx5200 when it came out at 1024 🙂

Seems like the fans are plentiful!

I agree the engine kicks ass. Looking back on it today, some of the graphics are definitely lacking (expected), but the physics, some of the pre-rendered lighting, models, and textures especially, don't look half bad at all.

I think the alternate ending is kind of dumb. I haven't finished the game the second time through yet but doesn't Mona Sax die? And you're saying she doesn't in the alternate ending? Well WTF - which ending is the "offical" ending. I thought there was gonna be an MP3 for sure.
