it's the commercial with the wine glasses on the hood and the LExus going 140mph!

i have a lexus and a bmw. i wouldn't consider the lexus on par.

Which specific models do you own? Same year?

Depends upon the models being compared. If you're comparing a Lexus ES250 to a 5 series BMW, I would agree with you.

Compare an LS430 or LS460 to a 7 series BMW and then your opinion might be worth something. Lexus set their sights on the high end Mercedes and BMW's as competition, and then proceeded to consistently eat into their market share with better build quality, better value for a competitive product, and appealing styling.

Both BMW and Mercedes stubbed their toes with inferior build quality and "innovations" like iDrive.

I saw a recent article about car quality, and the lexus came in with less than one defect per car. In other words, there was a chance that you could buy a lexus and have nothing wrong with it. No other company has ever done this. Mercedes quality has really fallen according to surveys.

4 companies did this...

BMW
Jaguar
Buick
Lexus

Mercedes remains at the top of the quality list and is actually gaining ground

I did. And my mistake. I was comparing the coupe and I wasn't aware of how much the SC's were going for.

Nice try though.

Mercedes has good build quality? that used to be true back in the 70s.

Now MB claim that the quality is coming back, but their top-of-the-line AMG models are still problematic even though they're supposely hand-built engines.

Lexus build quality cannot be matched by anybody. The 2nd closest to Lexus is Porsche (even though boxsters are the troublemakers, the 911(carrera, turbo, gt2/3) and the cayenne lines are tanks on steriods).

Here's a link for you:http://www.jdpower.com/news/releases/pressrelease.asp?ID=2005069

Notice Lexus is at the top with 81 problems per 100 vehicles. Then Jaguar, then Bmw with 95 problems/100 vehicles then Buick, Cadillac, then Mercedes with 104 problems/100 vehicles. This is the 2005 Initial Quality Study.

In the study, Toyota Motor Corporation earns 10 of the top model segment awards, with the Lexus SC 430 honored as the highest-ranking model for the second consecutive year, at 54 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). Other Toyota models earning segment awards include the Toyota Prius (Compact Car), Scion tC (Sporty Car) and Toyota RAV4 (Entry SUV

For the fourth consecutive year, Toyota Motor Corporation?s Tahara, Japan, car plant receives the Platinum Plant Quality Award for worldwide plant quality with a score of 59 PP100. The Tahara plant produces the Lexus GS 300/GS 430 and the Lexus LS 430. Toyota?s Higashi-Fuji, Japan, plant and Nissan?s Tochigi, Japan, plant earn the Silver and Bronze Plant Quality awards, respectively, among Asia Pacific plants.

toyota was always reliable, and lexus was always decent. honda's acura fell on hard times in the late 90's...it became bland and undesirable. high school racer boys with integras everywhere didn't help much either. infinity had the same problem..well not with the racer boys but it was bland and nissan itself wasn't doing very well before they got new leadership.

acura's integra got bland during the time it got changed to the RSX. Performance was there but wasn't enough to justify the price.
The Honda Accord also got boring, as did the civic.

THe Acura CL and RL, after they dropped the Legend name had a rough start.

All their grills in the V shape suck. Reminds of of a Buick skylark.

They're in the business of high revving 4 cylinder engines while the industry has changed to readily accept 6 to 8 cylinders with 280 HP and rear whell drive.

i don't get it. your title is trying to ask us why acura has a lessor name in japanese luxury cars, then you go and state that lexus is better (in par with BMW) or better. Or are you implying that lexus is only as good as BMW, and acuras are better. Or are you just throwing in your opinion, which is irrelevant to the question?

I have to say, if I'm paying $60,000+ for a car, one of the last things on my mind is reliability. Also, when I'm buying a $60,000+ car, Lexus isn't anywhere near the top... BMW, Audi are.

Because Acura is front wheel drive and Infiniti interiors are still a bit cheap.

Then you probably have never sat in models of all three marques. Just take a look at the interiors of all three from overall quality, refinement and quietness, Lexus trumps Acura and Infiniti.

Hell go look at the interiors of a G35 compared to an IS350 or an M35 compared to a GS430 or an MDX compared to a RX330.
