Why is it when you have nasal congestion...

Drainage is the reason. If you shift your head, it flows down the other tube.

Im eating breakfast right now and the thought of drainage goes nice with my poppyseed pancakes and ham.

Yes I get that quite a bit. I've noticed at night that if I sleep on my right side, my left nostril clears up, and vice-versa. Hahaha, so if one side is blocked up I sleep on the opposite site so I can actually breathe through my nose.

I am stuffed in my left as we speak... but it's always my left. WTF. I guess that's why The Man gave us 2.

Yes... it's the most annoying part of being sick.

it happens year round for me 🙁

You have allergies?

Yes but nothing works for it. Not clariton D, not singular, nothing. It sucks so bad I'd sell a kidney to be rid of them forever.

Do spicy foods help temporarily?

actually I think so, but I haven't had anything spicy in a while. I think they have to be really spicy in order to work.

IIRC there's a normal nasal/sinus phenomenon that one side of your nostrils tends to be more swollen than the other. (and hence more easily blocked up) Which side varies several times per day. Can't remember what this effect is called.

Was just about to post this, most of the time its because one of the nasal passages becomes swollen i think, gravity just pushes the swelling around i guess..

I have had the exact same problem for a few years now. I finally broke down and started the allergy shot treatment a couple weeks ago. It takes months to work, but supposedly works in most people who try it. I was just getting very sick of not being able to breathe out of one side of my nose.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with the nasal passage being swollen shut moreso than drainage.

yeah this. It sucks regardless. I think I might try doing the allergy therapy.
