Why is it THE Ohio State University?

I actually googled this a couple of months ago. Tory Holt of the Rams started saying it a couple of years back and now all the OSU guys do it.

It makes no difference. It's like saying "Matrix is my favorite movie." vs. "The Matrix is my favorite movie."

The Ohio State University is the actual name of the school... but nobody gives a damn about the word "the".

Whereas The Arizona State University isn't the name of the school.

Is there actually only ONE state university in Ohio?

As a 49 year old Buckeye, it isn't "the ohio state university" as far as I'm concerned. Just Ohio State University.

Somebody started calling it tOSU to differentiate between oregon state and ohio stae, i think, but Ohio State is the real OSU, and always will be.

Except for employees at OSU. And high school teachers. At the last high school I worked at, the teachers received a memo that if they were referring to The Ohio State University, they must either say "OSU" or the full name, including "The". :Q

Actually, most of the students at OSU that I know place emphasis on "The", as well. Hrmmmm.

That's actually the offical name of the school.

Sometime during my undergrad, we were all informed that the name of our school was The University of Toledo, and that we were one of two schools in Ohio with "The" in front of our name offically (the other being OSU).

I don't remember who told us that but they made it seem like a big deal and that it was almost an insult to call it University of Toledo - maybe that's the way it is at OSU too.

This is completely wrong. Google has failed you (rare, but it does happen). The first I remember hearing it was when I was young and then President Gordon Gee would call his university "The Ohio State University". I doubt he was the first person to use "the" or even came up with idea of adding "the", but I think he made it popular, so to speak. The short answer is that the name of the school is The Ohio State University, but not every school that has "the" in their name uses it in everyday conversation.

Edit: As for nobody giving a damn about the word "the", I can assure you that I attend THE Ohio State University.

The name of the university is, The Ohio State University.

And there are too many OSU teams. Ohio State, Oregon State, Oklahoma State, etc.

There is only one tOSU 🙂

There's actually both "Ohio University" (OU), as well as "Ohio State University" (OSU).

Except Torry Holt went to NC State.
